Maggie’s Amazing phenomena... Snow Rollers

Lived most of my life in the snow belt and never even HEARD of these... Called Snow Rollers. Wet Snow and high winds (we had 50 mph winds today) and it rolls the crust up. These pictures were taken near my farm.

At first, I thought they were some kind of Eskimo crop circles... but it's a real phenomena!

I spent 12 years as an avalanche forecaster, and these are common. They don't happen in all warm conditions, but I've got a couple good photos myself of these in my files somewhere. We (NWAC and other Fx folk) always called them pinwheels, but a rose.....

Pretty good sign of pending stability. When in the making, things can get a bit unstable (depending on structure) cause you've got increasing stress without immediate strength, but that works itself out (either with slides or time) pretty quick.

She certainly was gustin' today, pissing outdoors was definitely a 10 for difficulty with it blowing in every direction.

Wow, I have lived my whole life in upstate NY, and even spent 10 years along lake Ontario, and I ain't never seen anything like that before.

Yeah thats pretty wild, must have been a but gusty, thanks for sharing. See plenty of snow here in CT but I've never seen that before.

I saw that 2 years ago here in ND. It was one a warm, windy day in the spring and the top was melting. Pretty neat stuff.
