Due to the sale of another rifle, I have freed up the funds to put together the long range precision build I have been planning for a while. I have a Savage 111 in .308 on which I am going to be replacing everything but the receiver and bolt. I am wanting to re-barrel to .260 Rem. I would appreciate it if you gents could point me in the direction of some options for a high quality precision stainless drop in Savage barrel.

As for profile, I'm wanting something in the medium category, that would be conducive to hauling around in the field; I'm thinking of something along the lines of a heavy sporter or a light Palma. For length, I am thinking 26".

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Shilen and McGowen have screw on ready to go ones. Criterion has been getting really good reviews. Walther Lothar makes an excellent savage barrel

Don't forget about Pac-Nor. Most likely you'll have to order a custom barrel from one of the guys listed here to get exactly what you want, but check Northland Shooter Supply (@savageshooters.com) to see what Mr. Jim Briggs has in stock. Here's one of his listings that might interest you:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I just received 20 barrels from Shilen that I ordered for lighter weight hunting usage. These Shilen Stainless Match Barrels are all 24" Heavy Sporter Contour. They are one continious taper that stop at .715 at the muzzle. Very similar to the CBI Lite Varmint Contour. I have these in stock in the following calibers:
243 Winchester - 8 Twist
6.5 Creedmoor - 8 Twist
260 Remington - 8 Twist
6.5X55 Swede - 8 Twist
6.5X284 Norma - 8 Twist
7mm-08 Remington - 9 Twist
308 Winchester - 10 Twist

These are priced at $299.00 + S&H to your door. Very limited supplies in certain calibers, order early for the best selection.

Big +1 for Jim Briggs. Shilen quoted a 6 month turnarond. Mr. Briggs had the barrels to me in about a week and he charged ~ match prices for select match barrels.

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

We went with 28" Shilen Select Match barrels on both our Savage Mod 11 260 guns we put together last year. Couldn't be happier, and would do it again when they need replacing. Jim at NSS is the place to go.

+ 1 for Jim Briggs. I've used Shilen and CBI from him and all were good shooters.

Rock Creek now has some Savage pre-fits in stock. The Savage varmint contour is not to bad to carry weight wise. I think they run $425 shipped ready to spin on. They are cut rifled.

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

I have a savage action off at McGowen right now being barreled with a 1-8 28" Fluted Varmint Stainless with a Brake installed in 7mm Rem mag. Will let you know how it turns out, so far I am happy with them.

A 6.5 x 47 Lapua on a Stevens 200 is next.

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

I called NSS to order a Criterion, they were out but had a Shilen select on hand so picked it up. give him a call and see what he has. Great guy to work with

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

I have a Benchmark #4 contour 25" Savage prefit in 6.5x.284 Norma SS with a nitride finish, all work done by them.(except the nitride, they farmed that out).
It's GTG

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

I have a Benchmark barrel as well, mine is a Heavy sporter 25.25" 1 in 8 twist 5 grove 284win throated for the 180's in a long action, work done by Kevin Rayhill of Stockade gun stocks, barrel shoots lights out and with the 284 barrel, my 110 is my favorite rifle to shoot.

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

Criterion Light Varmint...26" is 3.5lb and the wait should be 8-12 weeks.

Jim Briggs @ NSS is a good guy and will fix you up right.

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

Just ordered mine from Jim YESTERDAY. 26" 1-8 twist Varmint Profile. $315 shipped. He has some coming in next week so if you order now, you could have it next week as not all of them are spoken for.

I was ready to order last tweak with cash in hand and I find out he's at SHOT. Had to wait till this week to order. Try calling late morning. I've never had an issue getting a hold of him early. When I talked to him yesterday, he was getting over a cold so isn't 100%.

Re: Recommend me a drop in Savage barrel in .260 Rem

He got my barrel the week before he went to SHOT, said he had over 100 barrels coming in while he was at SHOT so I'm sure he has been playing a lot of catch up.
