Im wanting to get a 338LM for the next long range gun. Just wondering what the average cost is for Laupa brass reloaded in your load.

Like corn, wheat and pork bellies, the price to reload the 338LM, or any cart, is dynamic and at the mercy of supply and demand.

I just looked at PowderValleyInc and they have Lapua 338LM brass in stock for $252+ per 100, before shipping. Throw in $8-$10, so call it $260 to your door.

I'm on 12-13 cycles with some of my Lapua brass, so divide 1300 into 260 and you get 20 cents per bang, but perhaps figure 10 cycles for 26 cents per shot.

You get about 80 rounds per pound, so depending on your powder cost, say $25 out the door, you're at 31 cents per round.

FGMM 215Ms might cost you $50 per 1k, so 5 cents.

Bullets are about $70 per 100, so 70 cents per hole.

Adding that all up, I get about $1.32 a pop, as a guess.

Basic math is fun.

Re: 338LM Reloading prices?

tc_firefighter311, as Chris has mentioned, reloading .338 LM is usually around $1.20 - $1.50 per round, depending on what you can get components for.

This is true. I was told it was around 2.50 a shot, so thats better than i thought. Thanks Guys

buying right, I have it down to .95 with a 300 SMK - but add in .35 per trigger pull for barrel life

Re: 338LM Reloading prices?

George is right. Its such a hot round that if you reload to tolerances based on the Lands be ready to watch it change with almost every trip to the range. Each shot kills your baby just a little on the inside. My TRG barrel has 900 rounds through it and is much closer to the end than the beginning.

I'm just over a thousand with mine and it's still nuts on.

The Finnish army snipers during their T&E with the TRG-42 and CrMo steel barrels (the SS barrels failed miserably) found that they could go 4000 rounds before rebarreling and still stay within their window of acceptable accuracy, which was somthing like 25cm at 1k meters.

I remember reading one guy here, who swapped out his 42 barrel at 1600 rounds and said that the borescope showed that the lands were pretty much 'gatored.

Chris if your using mil ammo im told the wear is far less than if your a guy who loads to kiss the lands. i dont know this for a fact as im on my first barrel with my 42.

They lost some of their database over on SnipersParadise a few years back, so linking the posts made by the fellow privy to the trials, isn't possible, but the Fins were abusive to their rifles and really cooked them pretty well. As I stated above, they quickly dispensed with the Sako SS barrels due to them not holding up to the extreme abuse.

Secondly, they were shooting fairly hot 2950-3000 fps rounds and it's the amount of powder/plasma that errodes your throat, not the seating depth, IMO. Somebody's actually formulated an 'errosion index' which is calculated by dividing powder weight in grains, by bullet caliber, or vice versa.

Still...having a borescope handy would be one way to tell, as well as accuracy tailing off.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, is my thought.

I've read about various bore coatings, but I haven't really considered sending a barrel out for the process.

I just did a quick Google and came up with a competing BR guy in Arkansas who typically gets 800-1000 accurate rounds out of his untreated barrels. His last three have been melonited and he's gotten 3600 out of the last one, so he swears by it.

There is some expansion and deformation that can occur and the hardness layer is quite thin, evidently.

Re: 338LM Reloading prices?

I had my new barrel melonited. I haven't had a chance to get really shoot much with it, but from all I've read, it should double the life of the barrel.
It shoots very accurate so far with Hornady 285 factory rounds, and I haven't even begun load development yet.
All the figuring I've done so far is leading me to say the $1.15-$1.35/ bang is pretty close.
Time will tell.
