Okay, so I love to work at my favorite shop on my days off... A customer comes in and is complaining to one of my co-workers/ volunteers about not having the right ammo and the difference in between price. Now, to back track a little, I love... Loooooove, working a gun store for many reasons but one of which becuase I like to give the help I always want at a shop and to treat others the way they deserve to be treated... Anyway, this guy is pissed becuase he can't get his head around why the difference in price of ammo. I step in and before me is a box of .338 marlin, a box of .338 federal, a box of .338 win., a boc of .338 lapua and a box of .338 extreme tactical. So, with raised eye brows I ask what the problem is.. He replys "your shop is a rip off, why is this box 20.00 and this one 70.00? They are only 20 rounds" so I explain the difference in caliber and what wildcat rounds are and why the difference in price. I see the stunned look in his face like he knows he just fucked up, but I don't let up. Mostly because behind him are 2 benchrest shooters watching for fun. He says he needs .338 but has no idea which one. So, we go box by box hoping his memory will recognize a shape. He is still dumbfounded. So finally, I tell him to go home, look at his barrel and it will say .338_____. and then come back... Never saw him again...The 2 benchrest shooters are in tears with giggley laughter... Dipshit.
Now my question is how does someone get a hold of any .338 and not know what the fuck he has?

Re: Dipshit of the day.

Im not in CO and I think I work with that guy..... One of my employees had purchased some sort of flashy 338WM rifle. Well went to another gunstore and bought some 338RUM ammo since it was cheaper somehow (dunno how that happened) he brought it to me since he knows I piddle around with guns and was trying to figure out why the boolits wouldn't fit.

Same guy is hung up on buying a 300RUM. Doesn't seem to believe me when I tell him I could do every bit of what he wants to do with a 300WM and probably do it better...

Re: Dipshit of the day.

Got a good one myself. A friend of mine who is a gun owner and hunter since he was young, tried to argue with me. He tried to tell me the Ruger Gunsite rifle was a combo semi-auto/boltaction. I tried to no avail to explain the difference in the actions. So he buys himself one, and low and behold its only a bolt action, like I tried to explain.lmfao

Re: Dipshit of the day.

Same thing, a guy had a 300 ultra, gun even said "300 ultra" didnt want to pay "ultra" price. Swears up and down win mag works just fine. I refuse to sell him a box so he doesn't damage his gun. Come back next day, buys and trys win mag in it. Wreck extractor and ejector when case head split above belt, tells manager to fire me because I told him they were interchangable. Manager knows me better than that. He tells me that same guy didnt want to spend decent money on a scope so he put a BSA on a wby 30-378 some years back.Scope blows up, it was the employees fault for talking him into that turd of a scope.

Re: Dipshit of the day.

Back in the mid 70s I was planning a trip to Afognak for elk hunting. A friend and fellow cop (after finding out I was going alone) said he would go with me.

Before I go with someone to bear country, I want to see them shoot so we go to the range. He shows up with a sporterized 1903 Springfield chambered for 308 Norma Magnum. He had 308 Win. ammo. I asked about the ammo and he says 308 is 308.

I also asked about the sights, the irons were removed and there was no scope. He says "moose are big, don't need sights.

I went hunting alone, but thats not the end of this rifle. About 3-4 years later I was contacted by another friend/officer asking about the gun as it was for sale. I says the 308 Norma would be a good round, but the rifle should have a scope. He bought the rifle and put on a scope.

BUT.........that's not the end of the story on this rifle.

About five years later, Another friend/police officer and fellow Guardsmans buys the rifle and brings it to me to check it out and I can't get it to chamber a round.

Upon checking this rifle, that went through three cops, the last one, had enough sense to have one check it out.

Who ever re-chambered the rifle forgot to open up the bolt face to take the magnum round. Simple fix. The last owner (who is also the AG of the AK National Guard) still has it and it shoots quite well.

Re: Dipshit of the day.

My father in law had a 308 Norma, Was sent to RWS to be rebuilt into a 300WM. Anyhow I bring that up Kraig because I have found 2 boxes of brass in the wild and sent him pics of the lot#'s #1 was at some store down near port aransas or aransas pass. The other one was in Decatur TX and both boxes were the same Lot#

Just an oddity because he had his built while he was in the Navy in Washington state. Some island up there.

Re: Dipshit of the day.

I wouldn't torture myself by working in a gunshop! I'd wind up in prison for murder!!

Re: Dipshit of the day.

Funny stories, but you did the right thing by respectfully trying to help instead of treating him like I have seen some mall ninja gun store employees doing.

The more everyone who owns a gun knows, the better everything will be for all of us, whether at the range, in the field, or in Congress. Ignorant gun owners are a liability to all.
