I am wanting to get into LR shooting. I am starting at Zero as far as long range goes and I would like to only buy equipment once. I have read many of the threads and decided that a USO is the way to go. I am planning on shooting 308 for now with a possible upgrade to 338 or 6mm in the future. I would like to shoot LR tactical competitions. My question is if I should get the 5-25 or the 3.2-17? Are there any big downsides to the higher mag other than a few ounces and hundreds of dollars? I am thinking if I do go 338 the higher mag will be needed and if not no harm done.

I'll pick both

Your intuition serves you well.
Sometimes more is more.

I got a 3.2-17 because I was already stretching my budget. No complaints, I can see a lot at 17x, however next time at the rodeo I'll opt for more on the top end.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

I'm w/OFIS, get the 25x, you won't wonder about it and end up with buyer's remorse, although there is not much remorse in any form w/USO. Better to have and not need, eh? You did not state your shooting discipline- hunting, fun, competition, etc. There is a big difference, i.e. there are weight limits for competition, you want more light transmission for a hunting rig, etc.. Lazy was quick to reply, send him a pm and he can give you a quote, and can cut some pretty good deals. Good luck-
Huey

if you order an USO, contact lazy, do NOT go through USO directly. Trust me on this.

Also, Lazy is a pimp mofo and his CS is 2nd to none.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

You can always turn the 5-25x down to 17x if you want, But you cant turn the 3.2-17x up to 25x haha

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

Be advised that the 5-25 USO is a large scope, maybe not on paper but it is in reality. I owned both a 5-25 and a 3.2-17 and now only own the 3.2-17. The 5-25 was just too large for me and optically, the 3.2-17 was better at 17x than the 5-25 was at 17x. For a comp rig that you will be running and gunning with, I would go 3.2-17. Now if this is for a 'stay in one place type' of rig, the USO 5-25 is a fine choice.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

I'd go with the 3.2-17. As was pointed out above the 5-25 is huge. I have used a 4x-16x for the past 2 years and have shot out to 1500 yards with it without wishing I had more magnification. You don't need more than 17x.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

from what USO told me, the only benefit to the larger diameter tube is that you'll be able to get more elevation adjustment. But unless you're shooting at EXTREME distances (2000 yards +), the adjustment available on the 30mm will be more then enough.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

Have you looked into the 3.8-22 at all?

The 3.2-17 will do you fine until you start hitting extreme ranges. I have a 5-25 and like others have said, it's a massive scope. But if you do get into a .338 at some point you'll appreciate having it.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

I like the 5-25 myself, have two and a third coming soon via lazy. I had a 3.2-17 but recently sold it. For the shooting I do I needed more magnification at the top end and wasn't hurt by the higher minimum magnification at the low end. Either scope is incredible and which ever one you get you'll not be disappointed.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

The 3.8-22 was pretty sweet. For 338, the 5-25 is the way to go. Not a plus or minus, but the 5-25 optics overall size is a bit larger than the 3.2-17.

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

.308, no question : 3.2 -17 T-Pal FTMFW.

Had one, sorry I sold it.

Unless you are shooting paper, all day long...

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

I'm running a 3.2-17x right now and love the scope, it is rock solid and holds up to everything I put it through during practical precision rifle matches and practice in the desert.

I have decided to upgrade to the 5-25x ER25 because I can always dial down and open up my field of view. I want more magnification for the pesky paper stages! You don't always have people working the pits putting up spotters for you, and if you can see your holes in paper to make corrections you can possibly gain points that otherwise would be lost on the next stage.

It was a hard lesson I learned during a monthly AZ LRPRS match. 200 and 300 yard paper killed me!

Re: USO sn-3 5-25 vs 3.2-17

I love my 3.2-17. I highly recommend it. I hardly ever crank the magnification over 12x in matches. Well, I use 16 or 17 if we shoot a cold bore shot @ 1" but that's really the only time I find myself wanting more magnification.

I think one thing you'll find is that you won't need as much magnification even shooting at or around 1000yds. Mirage will be a problem or you just simply won't need it.

USO is great and Lazy has some kick ass deals and will take care of you.

Rethink that .308 and join the the 6.5 club. You'll thank me later :)
