Ok, here is what I need. I am in the middle of a M70 build. I have all the parts I need sitting on the bench. The only thing I am lacking is the steel butt plate. Can anyone out there help me?

Re: M70 build

They are out there but the smiths that put pads on threw the steel in the corner and cut the widows peak out, most of them are dead now, that low comb stock and an 06 kick like hell off the bench or prone, Im taking mine to the deer stand today.

Re: M70 build

Doc ... any photos of your build?

I found a cherry 1953 M70 30-06 for sale in a local shop on consignment that was selling for a great price and had to pick it up. Originally was going to convert it to a sniper M70 but the thing is in such great shape, I can't get myself to do it. Am settling for just installing Witchata sling swivels and a repro unertyl scope.

Re: M70 build

The M70 I am going to use is a 1950 pre 64 target which is at the gun shop to be re blued. Here is a couple of pics I have on hand.

I have everything needed except for the Pre 64 M70 butt plate.

Re: M70 build

Thanks for the reply. But no it is not what I am looking for. I need the flat one without the strange tip on it.

Re: M70 build

Doc, could a guy use that butt plate and just mill off the point to get you up and running, until you can find the real deal?

Just a thought.

Respectfully,

Chet

Re: M70 build

You may want to check with Texas Brigade Armory and Celtic Rifles ... both look like they offer builds of these and may have a source for you on the butt plate.

Re: M70 build

I picked one up off of ebay a few months ago. Keep your eyes open, they do pop up for sale.

Side question, any interest in selling that target stock?

Re: M70 build

If you are going to use that standard stock, you will need the standard butt. Not the flat target butt. I think your standard stock is a late one that had a plastic butt. So, it does not have the tip inletted into the heal. If you are going to do it right, you need a low comb, steal butt stock. I have not seen a target weight barrel in a monte carlo stock. The USMC ones were all low comb. Your stock has some value so a trade will likely be possiable. Good luck with your project.

Re: M70 build

@Doc ... I spoke with Connor at Celtic Rifles today and he is a wealth of information regarding the M70. It is worth speaking with him, he may be able to help you out here.

What he said , The later monte carlo stock will feel better when you shoot, the low comb stocks kick like hell on the bench! It all depends on how accurate you want to make the gun, mine is a 56' target so the serial no is out of range, the old 8x unertl scopes are priced so far out of whack I gave up. the stock you want will have 20 lpi checkering, a few had no checkering. very best to you on a super ( my personal favorite) gun. The plastic butt plate you need for that stock is easy to find, I will dig around as I may have one.

Re: M70 build

Hello,
If you are planning a true M70 build you will need the metal buttplate with the "tooth" on the top.
Interestingly, you have the rifle setup correctly currently with the target stock, all you need is a 20X Lyman Super Targetspot scope to make a Van Orden rifle... the father of the M70.

Re: M70 build

Thank you for your information. I just received the tooth butt plate. Are you saying, I should put that butt plate on the target stock?
