Hello, to all. I have lurked on and off for a few years. Happy to be here and hopefully I can contribute and do a lot of reading........to the question

I'm shooting a factory remington 700LTR .308 with handloaded ammo

What size 5 shot groups @ 100 yards until you are shooting to the rifles full capability.

I'm going to go shoot my first competition, a factory varmint class. Just trying to see how far anyone else has pushed a "decent" factory rifle.

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

Depending on your ability, the gun's QC, and ammo type/quality...you <span style="font-style: italic">should</span> be able to print out 3/4-1 MOA 5 shot groups pretty regularly. If you happened to luck out and got one of the 'good' ones...which seem to becoming more and more rare...it <span style="font-style: italic">might</span> be capable of something approaching 1/2 MOA. Good luck.

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

The quality of your hand loads can also have a huge effect on accuracy. I know my savage 10FP was definitely capable of sub moa groups if I did my job. If your hand loads are up to snuff or when using factory match ammo I expect you shouldnt have much of an issue getting sub MOA groups at 100 yards and beyond.

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

Just picked up a Rem 700 AAC SD. It will only hold 1.5 to 1.75. To engage the rifling the C.O.A.L. would have to be at 2.964 with 155 Palmas. I am having the barrel set back to correct the factory mess. On the other hand my buddy's stock AAC holds .625 to .75 with Fed Gold Medal. Luck of the draw I guess.

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

The best I have shot with it is .592, 5 shot group. But consistently shoot in the .6xx moa with 5 shots.

Thanks for the replies, it gives me a ballpark on what I can expect.

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

I was shooting a Remington ACC-SD .308 in an Accuracy International chassis and I was easily pulling 1/2 MOA with Federal 168's through the factory barrel.

Here's what I shot with my ADL 26" 1:12 twist:

175 gr SMK with 42 grains Varget at 2.900 COL. I would say I got one the rare ones..

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

My stock R700 aac-sd would shoot pretty consistently at 1-1.5 moa out of the box even with factory match ammo. After bedding into a B&C it was around 3/4 moa with factory match ammo. Finally after learning to handload, the rifle will flirt with 1/2 moa but is usually around 0.6 moa pretty consistently. It is comforting to see groups shrink with each step taken. Next up is to see if Timney trigger will make a difference...

Good luck

This is what my SPSS typically gets out to 300yds. Shoots pretty good for a factory rig.

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

My shooting buddies and I agree that I got one of the 'good ones'. I can regularly print 1/4-1/2MOA groups at 100-300 yards. In fact, I'm so happy with it, I'm contemplating starting competitions this spring.

I can't post many groups because they don't meet the site requirements but I do have a 5 shot group, if you include the CCB (which is consistently about .75" left and slightly high) at 100 yards to reference.

This is a normal group for my SPS Tac at 100 yards:

Re: Accuracy question Rem .308?

a bad one will be 1-1.5MOA, typically .75 is what I'd expect...just hit or miss with Remington.

if you're hand loading, work within .010-.040 off the lands (maybe touching the lands) and you'll be able to shrink the group size...at least it's always been the case with my 700's.

wish mine was consistent...actually a 700P. so long as it's cold...groups very well but once it warms up...just under MOA is the best I can get.
