I've read and read and read, but still am not sure.

Here's my intended use....

Mostly benchrest and prone shooting at varied distances. Paper punching, and steel, out to 1,000yds.

I'd like to be able to do some ranging with my reticle.

I'd like to be able to both "dial in" my crosshair, and use "holdoff / holdover" for quick shots.

Can someone please tell me if I want FFP or SFP? Also, with a $1,200 budget, make scope recommendations if you want.

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

Vortex Viper PST 6x24x50 FFP mil mil and a good set of rings. Should put you right on budget...

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

FFP. For $1200, the Bushnell DMR with a G2 reticle.

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

Since I only went with a 4-16x, I saved the $$ and went with the SFP since 99.9% of the time I'd be at 16X. However, next time I'm probably going to go with a 24x or higher and THEN I'll definitely get the FFP.

First, SFP or FFP. If you are doing any ranging with different powers, FFP is faster.

But, that depends on your reticle. I prefer moa, but mil is easier to translate into both metric and imperial. No matter what, get the knob adjustment to match the reticle.

The reason I say to get a reticle you like is with FFP your reticle is fixed in relation to the target. As you range with the reticle, you never have to worry about being at the wrong setting so that your reticle doesn't match the values it gives. On an SFP scope, you have to be at a given power for the values of your reticle to be true. Either way, a reticle is more useable when you have go to values for it, rather than stop what you are doing and have to work up some math. Having to do that is almost useless if trying to figure a target on the move toward, or away from you. In that scenario, you estimate, see the miss/hit and hold. A reticle with enough values to give you the ability to adjust is nice. Having too much clutter in a reticle is not. For that reason I don't like Horus type scopes. Learning to plumb up and slide a mil or moa type standard crosshair is the way to go, IMO.

Now, shooting within your scopes travel, meaning both the knob adjustment and what you can hold on the reticle, is best served with an FFP scope. However, if you go beyond this range, dialing down to a known value on an SFP will give you extended range. Meaning a true one mil value at 15x is a two mil value at 7.5x. This is not standardized between different scopes. So you should check it if you do. Using this method I was able to accurately hit at one mile using my 12-42x56 2FP NF scope. But, I did sell it, as it didn't have enough travel.
Sticking to to the 16x-24x range of top power on a scope will usually give you plenty of travel for 1k. With a canted base you can increase range potential.

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

Sounds like you would enjoy a FFP reticle. Biggest competitors in that price range are:

Vortex Viper PST 4-16/6-24 x50

SWFA SS 5-20x50

Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21x50

I own the SWFA and have a fair amount of experience with the Vortex. Both were good and neither really stood out over the other. SWFA had better glass, but I liked the side focus and magnification ring on the Vortex better. Turrets were different, but both pretty good. 10mil/rev on the SWFA and 5mil/rev on the Vortex. Both had pretty good reticles, as well, but I favor the Vortex's a bit more. I like the magnification range of the SWFA more. Vortex is the only one available in MOA.

I have an HDMR on the way right now. From what I've read, the HDMR has the best of both worlds. Glass should be equal or better than the SWFA with good dials and controls all around. I like the G2 reticle, though I've never used one on the range. Perfect magnification range for this type of optic. 5mil/rev turrets if that matters to you. I think I prefer the 5mil/rev, but the only 10mil/rev turret I've used a lot is the SWFA.

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

Garandman, I will be the dissenter, you said mostly benchrest and prone shooting out to a thousand. If that is the case, then SFP, if you want to do lots of ranging and competitive tactical shooting then by all means ffp is the way to go. Benchrest and competitive prone shooting such as F-class, require a different approach, the reticle is most ffp scopes won't cut the mustard for benchrest shooting or f-class. Sandwarrior makes some excellent points, in f-class I am using NXS 12-42x56, its the basic go to scope for that discipline. In practical/ tactical matches I am still using a 4-14 SFP, it really doesn't hinder me because the magnification is pretty low, any higher and I would go with ffp. Try to spend a little time behind both, and see what u like.

....or elevation holdover/under, or leading moving targets, or holding wind etc. Ranging is the least of my reasons for being a FFP or fixed guy, since most ranging is done at full power for accuracy anyway.

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

Shooting from a fix position (bench or prone) to known distances does not require the use of FFP.

Not to say that from time to time you might want a FFP to quickly determine range, but if it's mostly fixed distances at targets, I think SFP is what I would go with.

Re: Do I want FFP, or SFP?

FFP for sure and MIL/MIL if you can find it.
I picked up a sweet used Mark 4 on here FFP TMR for under $900.
Its not Mil/Mil but its a great scope for the price.

the Viper PSTs will be hard to beat for your price range.

Good point, Sober

My favorite scope is my USO ST-10 that I use all holds (wind/elevation) on every rifle it sits on all the way out to 1k. I never have to change the power so I don't think about it.

IOR FFP... Solid scopes.
