Gunsmithing Source a short Anschutz rail?

I have a Rem 700 in .25-06 with the factory wood stock. I would like to install an Anschutz rail on it but the only one I can find is made by Versa-Pod and is too long. They say it's a 7.5" rail length and a 9" overall length.

I don't think I would feel safe using anything over 7.5" overall length on my stock. Does anyone know where I could find a rail that short? Thanks.

Re: Source a short Anschutz rail?

I have some shorter ones not sure if they are too short will measure tonight or PM me

Re: Source a short Anschutz rail?

Thanks for the offer. Someone pm'd me and explained that if I installed a rail on a sporter stock I'd likely crack the stock. I was not aware of that so I'm not sure I'll be able to do anything with it. Has anyone else cracked a thin stock installing a rail?

Re: Source a short Anschutz rail?

what do you need a rail for? If it's for a bipod or hand-stop you can probably go with a 1913 type rail.

I've seen a recessed Anschutz type rail in a sporter but I think it was custom, no problems with cracking...I'll do some more looking to see what I can find.

Call Chote and see if you can buy one of their 5" rails

To me a rail looks like an elegant solution to being able to change things out without making your stock look uglier and uglier with different holes in different places. It would also be quick for changing things.

I would like to be able to have a smooth stock if I am using bags or just a sling if I'm out hunting and planning on short range stuff or just a bipod if I'm just practicing or a sling and a bipod if I'm hunting but planning on taking a longer shot. It seems the rail would give me a lot of flexibility in that regard.

I would rather not have a 1913 permanently mounted to the bottom of the stock because you would always have something to hook on stuff even after removing sling swivels and bipod mounts but if that is the best way to go for my type of stock then I will do it.

Re: Source a short Anschutz rail?

Makes sense...yes a rail does give you added flexibility but they're typically not intended for lightweight stocks.

Chote has one on their "sniper" stock...maybe they'll sell you one.

As mentioned, I've seen them done on the standard sporter stock with no ill effects but do know that stock isn't meant for that accessory rail and does have the potential to eventually have issues. If you want it done, have a competent smith install it.

If you really want a versatile stock...you may want to consider something a little more heavy duty. McMillan offers a wood grain finish on their stocks...

maybe consider an HS precision pull-off...You'll have all the mass you need up front to add a rail

maybe call c.dixon at longrifles, inc. and see what he as to say.

As noted by previous posters installing an Anschutz Rail in your factory wood stock might not be feasible, as the Sporter style stock is rather shallow, and the Rail has to be inletted into the bottom of the fore arm. The rail is usually secured by machine screws threaded into T-Nuts. Some shallow depth synthetic stocks can be inletted to use Anschutz Rails, but wood will have a tendency to crack.

You might try calling McMillan and asking them about the feasibility someone (not them) installing one of their 8" Anschutz Rails in your factory wood stock. Better yet - if you can swing it, as seanh suggested look into a McMillan stock. Or maybe a Manners. Anyway, I believe that McMillan's 8" Anschutz Rail is 8" OAL (I have a 10" Anschutz Rail in the fore arm of my Tac Ops X-Ray 51 and it's OAL is 10"). Below is a photo of the 10" (OAL) Anschutz Rail installed in the fore arm of my Tac Ops X-Ray 51.

If you're able to get an Anschutz Rail installed into your stock, I highly recommend the ACCU-SHOT BT28 AFAR Kit used in conjunction with a Larue LT706 QD Mount + Harris BRM-S + KMW Pod-Loc. If you want to shoot off of sandbags you remove the bipod and the BT28 Rail (the Rail is held in with a pair of Hex screws). Below are some photos of the Larue LT706 + Harris BRM-S (6-9" Notched & Swivel bipod) + KMW Pod-Loc. Of course, the BT28 have been coated in Tac Ops OD Green-T to match the rifle.

Re: Source a short Anschutz rail?

Thanks Aries64. I'm confident that it's pictures of your rifle that I found elsewhere on snipershide that made me want an Anschutz rail in the first place. Looks great.

No problem - I'm glad my posts and photos helped. Good luck.
