I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong spot.
I'm brand new to bolt guns and I want to learn good habits straight off the bat. I'm looking for some training in the fundamentals of marksmanship and general precision shooting. I'll pay for your time. Experienced shooters only please.

I should add that I'd like to wait till it warms up a little bit.

Re: Precision Rifle Training near Dayton, OH

There are some really good videos out there you can watch to get prepared so you have good setup and form prior to doing some 1/1 or classes. Make sure you have a properly fitted rifle, have proper form, proper breathing and proper trigger control and follow-through. Learn how to use a bipod and load it properly as well.

Rifles Only has a great new DVD out and Lowlight has put together a great online training series you can purchase right here on the hide. I'd highly recommend both and do lots of dry fire practice, then head out to the range with a .22 or your normal rifle and practice your form. Your real challenge will be reading wind, and making calls, which is something you can practice on your front porch if you have a stretch of view. For longer shots you'll have to just get experience to see how the load you shoot works in the wind. Get a databook and lean how to use it, it will be invaluable. You don't need much in it to get started so don't get swept up in all the optional cards.

Thunder Valley is up by Zanesville and though I'm not sure they specifically teach, you can call and ask. Tom Sarver up there holds more than a few records.

Hawk, Thanks for the info. I ordered the Day One DVD and I'll definitely check out Thunder Valley. Is there a specific data book you recommend?

Re: Precision Rifle Training near Dayton, OH

If you'd like to join us when we venture down to Rayners you'd be more than welcome. http://www.raynersrange.com/ We're hoping to venture down when we get a break in the weather to sight in a couple new guns and tweak a couple of others.

He has a 200 yard sight in range with benches or prone and his long range stuff ranges from 234 to 1000 yards. Twelve different target distances with varying size targets at each location.

If you are looking for professional training we can't offer anything like that but would be more than glad to help you get started. We manage to occasionally hit a few targets and will pass along what we can to help.

Guess maybe saying we "occasionally" hit a few scared the OP off. Still be happy to have you join us for a practice day, in truth we do hit more than a few occasionally and between the group we shoot with will be glad to offer what we've learned. Agree on hoping for better weather, buddies want to go tomorrow (Sunday) but six inches of snow and cold is what I did in my younger days. We usually post on the Rayners thread when some of us are going to get together.

Haha. Even if it was "occasionally" you still would have more experience than me. I've been extra busy this week with the Great Gun Panic of 2013. The gun show was nuts today.

I'm waiting on my scope mount to show up so I can get on the range. I will check out the Rayners thread and hopefully be able to shoot with some of you soon. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions. I've not been on a more helpful or knowledgeable forum.

Re: Precision Rifle Training near Dayton, OH

We have a formal precision rifle course scheduled still with open spots March 29-30. It is in Lewistown, PA which is in Central/Western PA. Billeting and mess for breakfast and lunch available onsite.

It may be far for you but just reaching out.

There's a thread open in the training courses area here.

Re: Precision Rifle Training near Dayton, OH

I can't offer you formal training but I am local here in Dayton. If you ever want to get together to do some shooting I can share whatever I can to help get you started. I do most of my shooting down at Middletown Sportsman's... Range goes out to 200 yards and prone shooting is allowed...

Beyond 200 yards there is a range in Cincinatti out to 600 yards, then out to 1000 yards or more it's going to be a drive out to rayner's or thunder valley...

I just moved down here from Alaska so finding someone with some land to shoot with is still on the list.... Pm me if you're interested.

Re: Precision Rifle Training near Dayton, OH

Thanks Frogman. I'll take you up on that offer as soon as I get some glass for my rifle.

What part of Alaska? I spent two years in Fairbanks / Ft Wainwright when I was growing up.

Re: Precision Rifle Training near Dayton, OH

Eagle river... Just north of anchorage for the last five years. Sure miss it....hopefully will get back there to settle down....

If youre still selecting glass and want to look through a few different ones ive got a few vortex razors, vipers, super snipers and weavers if you're interested in looking and handling them... Send me a pm and we can try to connect whenever time allows.

Maybe we can meet up with topstrap out at rayner's or thunder valley sometime too.
