I did a search and really didn't find much on the topic of protecting your gun and would like to hear what some of you guys do.
If you you know of a thread I missed feel free to post it.

I know most of the shooters here only clean their guns when accuracy falls off but how often and what are you doing/using to prevent rust or pitting on the outside as well as around the bolt and in the barrel . I also would like to hear people's process on lubrication and what all they lubricate.

Ps
Who makes a real good quality bore guide that is made for a .260

Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: Cleaning/ Protecting you gun

I clean my gun every time I shoot. No matter how few rounds. IMO a high quality barrel doesn't need to be dirty to perform the way some other barrels do.

I use Shooters Choice for the carbon fouling and BoreTech Eliminator for the Copper fouling. As for the pitting and rusting, I baby my rifle and it is always cleaned and oiled with MilTech. At least any metal that doesnt have a baked on coating.

As for the bore guide I would try a Possum Hollow guide from Sinclairs. That's what I use in my .308 and I love it.

Re: Cleaning/ Protecting you gun

I clean all rifle and hand guns every outing no mater how many bullets has gone through them, been doing it for 25*years. To each is own though, I've never had any accuracy issue at all, go figure

Re: Cleaning/ Protecting you gun

Won't comment on cleaning technique as every person has their own but as far as your boreguide question send an email to Mike Lucas at [email protected] with the the rifle you are shooting and the cleaning rod that you use and he will fab you up a really nice fitting bore guide.

If you have questions just google the name.

Re: Cleaning/ Protecting you gun

Check out Bore Tech website. Lots of good information and products. Very helpful to me when I started out. I clean the chamber and clean and lube my bolt after each range trip, but only clean the barrel when accuracy starts the fade. Depends on your gun and the ammo you're shooting.

Re: Cleaning/ Protecting you gun

I used to clean after every shoot - I stopped and now clean when accuracy deteriorates. I keep the bolt body, internals, raceways and lugs lubed. I keep the humidity in my safe controlled with a light bulb - havent had and rust issues and im on the water. When I clean the barrel I use an MTM universal bore guide. Bore Tech, JB bore paste and CLP are the products I use.
