I remember after everything settled down from the 2008 election craze that a lot of ammo prices went up a bit. Rifle and shotgun ammo seemed to level back out but pistol and 22LR ammo was a consistently a few bucks more. At walmart alone federal 22 bulk pack jumped up $6 more after and the WWB pistol value packs went up anywhere from $6-10.

Anybody else think we might see something else like that again?

I miss the times about 6-7 years ago when 550 round packs of 22 were $9, and 100 round packs of 9mm were $10. We'll never see those prices again but I just hope they don't increase from what they are now.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

It is very difficult to forecast. On one side you have a competitive market, so if Remmy, Fed, CCI etc jack up their prices, Tula PPU and maybe some domestic manufactures will lower their prices. On the other side metal prices do increase every year, so prices may rise across the board.

The interesting thing to watch is what happens in Cali. If the ammo registration law passes, the process to obtain ammo will be beyond crazy, so many may resort to reloading (if it is not reclassified as manufacturing). So you will have a drastic reduction in factory ammo purchases leaving a bit of a surplus.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

The ammo price trend is similar to the gas price trend. When the supply can't keep up with the demand, prices skyrocket, then when supply catches back up with demand the prices come down - just not as far as they once were. Throw a little inflation in the mix, and maybe some government tax on ammo as there way of subverting the second amendment, and ammo prices may be unbearable in the near future.

I dont like it, but I dont mind paying a little more. Its always been an expensive hobby. Just wish I could actually find some. The shelves are bare everywhere!

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

If you could keep all the retards from running out and buying every box available we wouldn't have this problem. Hell, I can't even find 115gn fmj projectiles so I can reload some 9mm. Nor can I find 178gn SMK to reload for my .308
It's not the govt or manufacturers cutting down the supply, it's our own shooting buddies that are running around like chickens with their heads cut off. If you or anyone you know are one of these idiots please stop the insanity.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

Well, when the prices start to come down, make a concerted effort to maintain a stock that will keep you stocked for times like these.

As others have mentioned its hard to forecast right now. Once we know the fate of the AWB being introduced I think you will see the craze die down a bit but it will take a while before the shelves are stocked again.I think the AWB ban is going to die and it will be kind of like the 08 election only a little longer to recover. This time the buy up on weapons and ammo is MUCH worse. Last time was bad but I don't remember seeing M193 ball ammo going for 1$ a round in some cases! Even though prices on AR's went up they were still available, at least where i live, but they were inflated. Not as bad as they are now.

I agree with the gas price analogy someone else posted and would add that, like gas prices, when they fall they will float down slowly like a feather and not just drop. Then they will bottom out slightly higher than before but again, since this buy up has been and continues to be SO bad, it could be a year or 2 before we see significant price reductions. IMO anyway for what its worth.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

This whole thing is nuts. Almost puked when I saw 500rd cases of wolf 223 for $500 at a shop and people were buying it up!

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

    where have you been.
    This all started on 12/17/12
the monday after 12/14/12, Adam Lansa and the sandy hook massacre.

    I have seen recently 1000 rounds xm193 for $999.00!!!

I have been telling guys i shoot with for years to be sure and have at least 1000 rds per .556 rifle for emergencies, and another 1000+ for matches and training.

No one listened, they all spent money on $300.00 backpacks and $200.00 tactical jackets.

Now they have no ammo to shoot matches or train, and Im not selling any of mine....

I hate to be that guy, but I told ya so.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

22lr is no where to found in TN. I have been shooting my blackout alot, i have reloading supplies, and can get more, also alot of 308 subsonic's. just plain crazy. I have a personal stock of 556, 762, 40S&W, and 45ACP, but until things start to easy up I'm not shooting near as much.

tired of the Govt messing with US.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

Luckily I have enough to get me through this upcoming season for the most part although I wouldn't mind having a little more 308. For me, even if I run out it won't be too bad because aside from rifle and pistol shooting I also love to trap shoot. 12GA target loads are still plentiful, at least in my area, and for the most part costs the same. Hopefully it will die down soon but if not I'll give a good clean and lube to the AR, bolt guns and pistols and then dust of the 12 O/U and head out to bust some clays. Perhaps more people will take up trap or skeet. Just don't buy up all the target loads now too

You have to admit though, they do look good while not shooting.

I followed your lead. Lots of my friends not shooting because they only bought the night before going to the range.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

found .22 online. $37.95 for 500.......ugh think ill wait for it to die down.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

in a 6 months when people quit buying ammo like its Pepsi the price will drop! now when ammo is rationed and the price is 20% higher and retailers are making a VERY good margin selling their inventory with no problems they are going to keep this going as long as they can!

That's not too bad, 22lr has been going like candy for $.10+ a round on gunbroker. $38/500 is high but its not highway robbery either.

I remember going to walmart and getting 4 packs of federal 550 round value packs for $8.97 a piece and shooting all weekend sun up to sun down with my brother... that was only about 6 years ago...

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

Some portion of ammo price increases has come from the increased cost of input materials; some portion has come from increased demand.

But I don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out why ammo is more expensive; I just know that it generally costs more in the future than it did in the past, and that usually merits picking some up whenever I can afford to do so (the obvious exceptions being periods such as the present).

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

We have just gotten the 2013 price list from Black Hills Ammunition. I was glad to see that for the most part prices only went up about 5%. We are keeping our pricing in line with those increases. We have layers of backorders that go back to before the election, and Sandy Hook. We hope to see these orders come in over the next few months. After the tri-fecta of election/Sandy Hook/renewed interest in AWB, everybody was cleaned out and deeply backordered. I think the worst of pricing and availibilty is yet to come.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

It doesn't matter what prices use to be, should be, or why they are so high now....bottom line becomes If you don't have anything to feed it... all you have is an expensive club or paperweight.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

I agree with A78063 I preached to my friends as well. I bought 20000 22lr a ton of 556 9mm and 308 tips, primers and powder enough to get me through the season. I warned them that this might happen.. I am unemployed and could really use the $100 per 500 CCI 22s but I am not selling I just hope it levels off and balances back out soon

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

I just wish I hadn't shot up all my 9mm.......Got plenty of everything but 9mm....... I refuse to pay these prices and I can't find projectiles for 9mm..... going to have to cast me some boolits for 9mm now....

A local shop has bulk 9mm bullets in stock, I saw them tonight. I don't know what they're charging though. I'm going back tomorrow night and can check it out.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

Lesson learned. Lets hope they come down. I will be stocking up when they do.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

Walked into one of the local gun shops looking for 308 ammo found four boxes of 168fgmm he wanted 45 a box. He said thats a fair price i walked out and i will not be going back to him. if we dont pay that kind of price they will either let it collect dust or drop the price their choice

They are in-stock for 9mm bullets. They are behind on shipping though.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

Local shop raised the price of 10 round. 10/22 magazines to $80, and was bragging about it. Won't set foot in that place again.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

The industry as a whole learned some big lessons after the 1st election. Manufacturers went insane on the price increases. I remember Winchester going up 5 distinct times during 1st year alone and most other ammo manufacturers followed. Firearms manufacturers and distributors were even worse. As it began to die down many dealers and distributors suffered greatly as they had bought quite a bit of inventory at severely inflated prices and then couldn't sell them. It caused quite a few distributors to go out of business.

I work at a shooting sports wholesaler. Overall the manufacturers and distributors realized they couldn't do that this time around. While our costs and prices have gone up some they haven't gone up nearly as much as compared to before. Some distributors took an across the board price increase of $100 per AR but that has been on the high end from the distribution stand point. A couple of manufacturers (Century International for one) also took an across the board price increase). Those have been the exception and not the norm. Most have shown moderate price increases.

Very few retail customers realize how low the profit margins are in this industry so they are surprised when dealers actually get to make a normal retail markup.

The dealers this time around are definitely profiting as the supply can't meet the demand and they can make a very nice markup for a bit. It will correct itself quickly as demand drops off.

Prices may come down but I think availability will be tight for some time. People caught with pants down will continue to panic and buy whenever available. Add newbies to the equation and it's going to be tight for a lonnnnnng time!

How much is enough 1000 pounds of gun powder, 100000 bullets. 50000 rounds various ammo, 50000 primres double triple wtf? People just need to stop. I cant even imagine if some idiotic ban does come. If it does cool down will people take loans to buy components maybee 20k. I went to buy a dillon 650 today cant even get one for 8 weeks. This is fucked. Im so tired of this shit im about to say fuck it. I actually let this stress me out.

Re: Ammo price increases after all of this?

don't blame the smaller retailers for profiteering. put yourself in the mom and pop gunshop owners shoes. after the second or third customer comes through bragging that they doubled their money on the gun they bought last week, would you raise your prices so you would make that money, not them? i bet yes.

Everybody everywhere is panicking buying everything to stockpile. I was fortunate enough to see this coming & bought some components way before the election. If the stockpilers do not stop soon it may be another year before anything is in stock. Some stock does exist (albeit at inflated prices) but you must look several times daily to find it. About the only thing i need is some sm pistol primers before i run out. I've had to reduce the amount i shoot just so i can go out every so often.

Rich, If you need to load some pistol on a 650, you could always stop by & use mine. Just bring your components
