Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Not sure, but I love that round. Funny thing is there's still quite a bit of that left at Sportsman's Warehouse in my neck of the woods.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Thats what got me looking. There are ammo cans of 17 HMR on the shelf at a local shop.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Remington had a 597 in .17 HMR bit recalled all the rifles. It seems the pressures generated was just too much for the rimfire semi-auto actions. Volquartsen makes one though (10/22 style action).

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I really love my bolt 17 HMR. Its a great gun to have for shooting small animals. Semi auto would be nice rifle. Like base it off of the ruger 10/22.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

It'd be cool if that new STG-44 clone that Umarex has put was chambered in 17 HMR.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Ruger made a 10-22 Magnum for a while. I bought one and put a Butler Creek .17HMR conversion kit on it. Best thing for sage rats, ever. Stupidly, I sold it, and have been looking for another 10-22 Magnum ever since. I found another conversion kit which is just gathering dust.
Anybody got a 10-22 Magnum they want to sell?

Yeah sure, if you want to spend from $1500 to $4000 on one: Base Model

I still think Ruger is really missing the boat on this one. The most popular caliber in a century, and they're not updating the Magnum to handle it.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Yes the pressure is too high. I had a 597 Remington to blew up on me. It was a blast on prairie dogs. I went with a 547 Remington much safer for a lefty. I love the 17.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Alexander Arms has a fantastic AR-15 upper receiver chambered in this round.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

There's a bit of engineering that has to go into making the .17 HMR work in the AR15, and it doesn't involve just dropping in a conversion like the .22 LR.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I still have a 597, they sent the recall letter and the 250 dollar offer or something. I free floated mine and it shoots great. hope it doesnt blow up. Never had a problem yet tho.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

Its b.s. the $250 thing. My rifle was much more than that. I had the heavy barrel laminate. When mine went it blew out the magazine and the extractor.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I just found a reason to buy one of those plastic lowers.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I have a Volquartsen tf-17 on order From the SHOT show.. Just waiting on them to call and say its ready for shipment.. it felt really good in my hands.. I surely hope its as good as everyone says it is...

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I don't know how true it is, but I was told it was a feeding issue. The shape of the round coming out of the magazine caused a slight tilt to the cartridge. This put the tip of the bullet outside the action and the force of the bolt hitting the rim set the round off.

this is true, I know a guy that had one go off like that. The other thing is that if you do get a misfeed sometimes the bullet gets set back and you get major over pressure or worse.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I know that a small company called Excel Arms made an Accelerator Rifle and Pistol that was chambered in .17hmr. I shot one a little bit and it was fun and it seemed to shoot decent. They weren't overly popular and I would bet you could get one for cheap if you were dying for a semi auto 17hmr.

Re: Why no 17 HMR semi-autos?

I know i wish those MP5 clones or that stg was in 17, it would actually be worth having besides just fun.
