Anybody here hunt with pistols? I dearly love my Encore in .30/06. With a 150 gr Nosler BT it is devastating on deer. Tired it for elk this year but didn't see but one elk. Didn't know she was legal or I would of shot her.
It's still my preferred method of hunting. .357 max out of a contender for deer sized game and my ruger super Blackhawk .44 mag for shorter ranges. Contender is scoped as I use that out to 150 yards or so and the .44 is iron sights for quick use in brushy spots for hogs.
I love hunting with my S&W 657. I have taken javelina, Texas hog and tons of jacks with 210 grain Hornady XTP's @ about 1400 fps. I hunted cow elk last year with my Model 29 but didn't get a shot with it. I wound up getting one with my '06 though.
I have the Savage Super Striker chambered in .243 Win, and the Magnum Research Lone Eagle in .308 Win. Shot some pigs with them but that is about it. I keep thinking about deer hunting with one, but just haven't made the effort yet.
My 45 long colt out of a Freedom Arms revolver goes with me on every big game hunt. I shoot 250 and 300 g LBT bullets. Firm believer in the LBT bullets for hunting.

How is the recoil with your .243 because that is the next barrel I want to get for my Encore,
Deer hunting with a pistol is a gas. Here is a pictue of the little spike buck I took with the Encore in 2011. Took him at about 125 yards. One shot through the lungs with a Nosler BT & I had a blood trail on the off side that was about a foot wide.
Its not bad, but the Striker is a slightly heavier pistol, 14" barrel, with a brake. I had a contender but sold it a couple of years back, they are great guns. I think you will enjoy the .243 on it.
Just realized your encore is in 30/06. Wow! If you are comfortable with that in your hands, the .243 will be no breeze. My Striker will shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards consistently and I haven't had any problems knocking down pigs with it, so I would say that I am pleased. Hopefully you will have same or better results with yours.

I can shoot it decent but the recoil is stout and lets a person know it is there.
I have used a .243 quite a bit in a rifle & I really love the cartridge.
I have a Colt Realtree anaconda and a Ruger Redhawk that I hunt with. Ive yet to shoot a deer with either but hopefully this next season I can bag a deer with one of my pistols.

I take it from your "handle" that you'er from Wyoming. I started handgun hunting back in 1977. since then I have made several trips to the wonderful state of Wyo. for mule deer and antelope and Alaska for caribou. a friend and I took a four day weekend and flew out to SD just to shoot prairie dogs with contenders. I cut my eyeteeth on pistols by shooting silhouets during the 80's and learned that you really give up nothing by hunting with handguns as long as you know your range and use enough gun for the job. my favorite in the contender is the JDJ .309 which is a .444 case necked down to .30, basically a .308. I like the 165 gr. bal. tip. I won the big mule deer contest through HANDGUN HUNTERS INTERNATIONAL with that gun and load in 1996. Like others on here, that's about all I hunt with anymore. My favorite revolver is my Ruger BH in .41 mag. or my bisley in .45 lc. By the way HHI is fine orginization to belong to!! I'm a charter member since 1978
I use a Super Redhawk 454 Casull for deer and a Mark II target for coon and squirrel hunting. I like carrying the pistols for a change from time to time.
Started with a S&W 629, moved to a Desert Eagle 44mag 6" & later 10" then a 15" 454 encore but always used 45 colt +p's and finally where I am staying, Contender 10" 44 mag, 45 colt Bisley Ruger and a MkII Ruger competition for squirrels which, I might add, is what started my hunting with a handgun obsession.
I'm a Super Blackhawk kinda guy...straight iron sights 7" barrel in 44mag. Taken 3 whitetail buck and 7 doe in the past several years. 240gr. Nosler partition hollowpoint was my choice until discontinued, now experimenting with a few others to decide what the new pill will be.
I've taken a total of 2 rabbits with a single-six in .22lr.
Hadn't thought I was going to see anything that day which is why I took the revolver instead of my .17, but I also didn't want to go with nothing because hunting without a weapon is called "hiking".
