99% to the morons, 1% to the shooters. I decided to stop in Bass Pro shop today on my way home to try and trick myself into thinking that they would actually have shit, of course not. Tons of .17HMR and .22LR Magnum, 22-250, Shotgun etc.... Theres a guy there in the isle literally sweeping his arm across the shelf just dumping the .17HMR and .22LR Magnum into his basket. I said to the guy "that ammo seems to be the best thing going right now considering its the only thing you can actually find huh?" . He looks at me and says "hell yeah, I just bought a Ruger 10/22 with an Assault Rifle stock and a Ruger Mark 3 hand gun today that I'm going shoot the hell out of. Screw all that other hard to find ammo".............I had to ask him if he had kids and he said no so I walked away.

If he had kids I would have told him his face was about to resemble mashed cherry pie but I'll let him learn on his own.

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

Good news for those of us who primarily shoot .17 HMR these days. Our weirdo cartridges are the last ones on the shelves.

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

Stopped at the local wally world last night and picked up my limit of 3 boxes of ammo. The guy sad this was there first shipment of ammo in over 2 weeks. he was selling it off the cart and not even bothering to put it on the shelves because it was going so fast. He also asked every person who bought ammo is this for a hand gun, one man told him it was none of his fucking business it was now a store policy. the guy was mad as hell and said do i how many times a day you pump your old lady, silence and he got his ammo.

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

My methodology of buying "the most readily available ammo" apparently didn't work out so well for me.........9mm, 45, .223 and .308 is harder to get and more expensive than plutonium. Oh yeah, let's not forget .22lr......ooooh .22 is so cheap and it's everywhere, I don't need to stock up on that......

Why would it matter if he had kids. If you have kids does it mean you cant have ammo. Is it a new law i didnt here about

because he didnt want the kids hurt when his shit blew up in his face for using the wrong ammo.

To this point... I've heard this logic in the past. In an "end of the world" scenario you want to have 5.56 or 7.62 rifles and 9mm or 45acp pistols because that is what the military uses- and is thus very common and very popular. Okay, I'm going to let my ignorance show. First, I am not now nor have I ever been in the military. And, I am old enough now that it is VERY unlikely that I ever will be. So, I've never been on a battle field and the closest that I have ever been to a "two way range" is a poorly orchestrated dove shoot. That being said, how much ammunition does one reasonably expect to find dropped, misplaced, or left behind by those organizations whose choice of arms and ammunition you have mimicked? I know that for my part a dropped piece of brass elicits a lengthy search only matched by the string of curses laid down during the search. And, in his recollection of his experiences in the Pacific Theater during World War II- With the Old Breed- Eugene Sledge recounts brass policing detail where every piece of brass on the island (I forget which one) was policed and binned for disposal by the marines. Is the yellow brick road paved with ammunition cast off in the wake of an advancing army or occupation force? My observations at Bass Pro, Academy, Walmart, etc mirrors what everyone else is seeing- namely that 22lr, 45acp, 9mm, 223rem, and 308win in rare to nonexistent on store shelves. Academy has instituted a policy of one box of each and three boxes max of any for the above calibers. Reloading components are as scarce. While I should be able to feed my 270win and 7mm rem mag, my 308 is going on a starvation diet until things loosen up some.

Ah, the road less taken- Academy had a ton of 7.62x54R when I was there...

By the way, "With the Old Breed" formed part of the foundation for "The Pacific," HBO and Tom Hanks' follow-on miniseries to "Band of Brothers." The book is a very good read, and the miniseries was worth the cost of the DVD box set.

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

I would expect ammunition in the hands of the military is going to stay in the hands of the military unless something very unexpected occurs. My reason for picking the big 4 calibers is because, until recently, you could find bunches of it, lots of choices, and usually pretty cheap.

Actually the military only buys first class ammo. We the people get the seconds and all other left overs. Also most military ammo is to military spec and not sold to anyone else unless it's rejected by the military (ie crimped primers and bullets installed with liquid to keep moister away from the powder). That's why people can come here and say I shot some WWII ammo and it shot just fine.

Glad I reload, I ain't searching the stores for anything. I do have some 45 grain bullets ordered from Cabela's, they were going to be here a month later 1/25, now there not going to be here till 2/25. So who knows when they will get here. It's not cramping my style or shooting though.

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

CDNN sent out an Email today saying they had 40 S&W FMJ available and Kesselring's Gun shop is advertising all kinds of Glock mags for 35 bucks. I bought some magazines I don't need. I guess I'm part of the problem.

It wasn't a flawed plan, it was simply a plan that didn't get placed into action quickly or vigorously enough, and failed to consider the hordes of like-minded people doing exactly the same thing.

I look at my 7.92x57, 7.62x54R, 7.5x55, 5.45x39, and 9x18 and feel a bit better about the path not taken. I have more typical calibers as well, but I'm not too worried yet.

I hear ya Veer. I am thinkin that Makarov would have been a good investment when I was thinkin about it last year. Hindsight baby!

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

Here, the shelves are full of .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .357 Magnum, .357 Sig, .22 WMR, and 17 HMR. There's plenty of 7.62x39, .308, .30-06, and hunting cartridges. No .22lr,.308 Match ammo, or .223/5.56x45 NATO.

I just roll my own and buy in bulk anyway. I'm sitting good enough that I should be fine on powder for my match rifle and primers for everything. I just buy primers in 5k cases and 8lb jugs of powder and replace when I get down to about 2 lbs. Unfortunately, all the powder disappeared when I got to my reorder point for H335, so I guess limited AR shooting for a while.

Re: So I found out where all the ammo is going...

Tyler, try some other powders. There are quite a few that work well in 5.56. No reason not to shoot as long as you have brass, primers, and projectiles.
I talked to one dealer near home, and he tells me that quite a few people have bought components from him who don't even reload. I thought that was kinda stupid. They don't have any equipment, but they bought powder, brass, primers and projectiles....go figure.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to have to do. I've got BL-C2 from my varmint rifle and some Benchmark I picked up to try, but everything else is pretty much gone locally. This is worse than 2008!

That is nuts people buying up stuff they won't use. Guess they are figuring the world ends tomorrow and they can barter with it?

Yes, you are the only one in the world who didn't hear about it. Sucks to be you.
