ar in 300SAUM

Re: ar in 300SAUM

I have a 300SAUM bolt rifle and like it but I wouldn't want one in an AR platform. The only AR platform I would consider besides 223 and 308 would maybe be a 243. Even then I think I'd rather have the 308.

Yet another bastard chambering that received little support from consumers and with the little support that existed...mfgs had little to no interest (financially or otherwise) in continuing to support it based on the money/time/etc. involved in mfging one-off parts for it to make it work in the large-frame AR platform.

Furthermore, while SA in name, the magazine-length also hamstrings the 300SAUM to a certain extent because you are limited with stock mags and you really need around a min COAL of 2.825" with the cartridge, especially with the longer, heavier pills.

Re: ar in 300SAUM

Lack of consumer interest in the cartidge. Now there seems to be pretty good interest SAUM family except manufacturer interest.

Whats mag length on 300 SAUM magazines?

I'd say that would be a fairly bad ass rig!

I saw the new Nemo arms AR in 300 WM at Shot Show - it was BAD ASS!! Very innovative design and improvements. But very pricey at approx. $5,700

Re: ar in 300SAUM

Shot with a guy that was running a nemo 300 wm at woodys match a couple months ago. that thing was sweet. 5700 doesn't seem too steep now days though.

Re: ar in 300SAUM

The 300 SAUM isn't a bastard caliber in an AR by any stretch and according to both DPMS and Armalite, the reason it was dropped, WAS due to limited consumer interest. However, the reason consumer interest fell off the grid was because the AWB had the greatest majority of consumers chasing the standard calibers due to production availability.
I was told that less than 200 were sold each year for the Armalite.

As for one-off parts...the only thing that separates it from the standard AR-10s is the bolt and the gas port location/tube length. An issue I believe could have been handled with an adjustable gas block, rather than the 1/4" longer gas port location.
But I digress.

The .300 SAUM is an insanely awesome hunting and long range semi auto, and it's a flat our PERFORMER.
I believe DPMS fell short with their design because they offered it with a 20" barrel, which limited the ballistic superiority it has over the .308. Armalite on the other hand, offered it with a 1:10 twist 24" barrel.

I've personally taken mine out to a mile on 13" steel plates and am currently running 190 VLDs at 2915 fps. I've also ran 210 VLDs at nearly that same velocity before running into pressure signs.

I've run both 190s and 210s at standard Armalite Mag length with 1/2 MOA accuracy and 2900+ velocities, but I've also ran a modified hunting mag with rounds seated at 2.910" to reduce some pressure.

If you want one, I believe Accuracy Systems is the only one still building them, mostly because I think they just had a stockpile of bolts from back in the day. This is purely speculation, but at any rate...they are the only one I know of still building them on a production status. Most of their rifles have a 1/2 MOA guarantee but I believe they stick to a 3/4 MOA word on their large frame builds.
I plan to build another upper in 7mm SAUM with most likely 168 VLDs and I have no idea it will perform just as well.

I've shot plenty of sub 1/2 groups with this thing and it was RARE to see any load development yield a group larger than MOA.
My Armalite ULTRA SASS
500, 700 and 800 load development

Well mine is on order and should ship any day but it's chambered in 30-06. Why? Because it hits a LOT harder than 5.56 and at this point 30-06 is cheaper (oddly enough).
