I'm looking to build a light weight 600-800 yard rifle for mostly hunting and some fun Tactical shooting. trying to determine the weight range and what to look for. Its gonna be a 6.5 WSM....what should I expect for weights of the different components. trying to be around 10-11lbs
Here is what I know

Rem 700 SA with Bolt.......1.6lbs
Stock Trigger(for now).....0.2oz
Stock...........................?
Barrel/Lug....................?
DBM/Mag...(PTG)............?
Scope.(Viper HS 4-16x50)...1.27lbs

Barrel contour I'm thinking is around .700-.750ish

Thanks

Re: Rifle components Weight

MINUTEOFANIMAL,

I am doing somewhat the same thing. The PT&G bottom metal with mag in place is right at 1# according to my scales. Wish I had more for you. Good luck.

Re: Rifle components Weight

A McMillan HTG General Purpose Hunting stock is about 2 to 2.25 pounds and like a sporter style barrel can be about 2.8 to 3.8 pounds depending on whos you go with, could be more or less again all on brand choice. A target/varmint style barrel can be anywhere from 5.5 to 8 pounds and up.

Re: Rifle components Weight

MINUTEOFANIMAL,
check out the group buy on this forum for a Manners stock offering on their new line of elite hunting stocks. There is one that crosses over to tactical and I think is coming in at about a pound and a half. In addition he has some excellent prices being offered.

Re: Rifle components Weight

+1 For the new Manners Stocks. They will be the perfect thing for a lightweight build. They all come in somewhere around 1.5 lbs if I remember right. Plus the crew at Manners is first rate. You will also have to go with a lighter contour barrel to reach your weight, if you check out the barrel makers website the post a page that has the weights according the the contour.

Re: Rifle components Weight

Also just putting myself a lighter tactical hunting rig together.
She is planned on Remmy 308 /aics mag and thinking of a fluted varmint 20-22" barrel. I made myself an E-Tac stock already that will finish at around 28oZ (800g) including integrated cheek raiser. Roedale suppressor 7oZ. For the long trips 6.5-20x50 Conquest and otherwise Kahles 624i.

Re: Rifle components Weight

I would also like some input on being to light....I remember my last gunsmith talking about a balance in the gun....not too heavy barrel on a light stock....etc...
is there a rule of thumb for this?

Re: Rifle components Weight

Light stock light barrel? I think this balance thing is somewhat overrated. I shot about 25 deer offhand between 5m and 150m in the last year and a half, used a light tactical stock with a slightly heavier than varmint barrel, also used a medium weight 308 barrel on a 700gram carbon stock, also a 20" light barreled 308 with a 700 gram stock and a 30-30 Winchester lever...got on with all of them. The only thing that is important for me is that the scope doesn't have too much mag for close running shots. Not sure if balance is important off a bipod.
Quite a few driven boar shooters prefer a varmint barrel on an otherwise light hunting rig.

Got this little sika calf this morning with the medium weight 308 and suppressor at about 15yds, running flat out through small trees. The 6.5-20 scope is a bit awkward for that, rifle is ok.
