Well I have been enjoying my Model 700 ADL at the range for a while, but I'm wanting to upgrade it a little at a time. But from what I see when I add the cost of a quality stock, a a drop magazine floorplate and a magazine, and lastly get it all bedded. Or I could just save and buy a chassis all at once. Wouldn't it be a lot easier and cheaper to buy a chassis(the aics 1.5 in particular), or should I just buy it a little at a time.

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

If you are wanting to go to a chassis eventually, I would go ahead and do it from the beginning.

Just my opinion. No reason to keep changing your gun.

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

When I added up the cost of a stock with the adjustability that I wanted, DBM and required smith work, I decided to go with an XLR chassis. That chassis is much less $$$ than a good stock/extras. I'm probably a week out on the XLR, so I can't give a recommendation on it.

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

Well I found the manners t4 chassis at stockys for 900 and I really like it because I'd rather have a composite stock.

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

If you want the chassis then save for it. You will only regret settling in the long run. The manners with mini chassis is a great drop in option. The XLR and Mcrees are option packed for the price range

Tactical Hunter,
I was in a similar position to yours about a year ago. I looked at the same upgrade and was very impressed with the XLR option. Not a lot of money, quick turn around and a lot of flexibility. I ended up not getting it because the aluminum always felt too hot on a hot day. Being in the hot part of CA it became a challenge so I was fortunate to try it before buying. If you wont be shooting it in hotter temps then look at the xlr.

If you want a more traditional stock Manners has a great offer in the group buy area that you might take a look at. I think I am going to take advantage of that with the DBM mini chassis.

I would also spend time here....I learn a lot from people that have years of experience and they are generally very helpful.

Best of luck

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

I originally bought a Bell and Carlson and inlet it myself for a DBM, added flush cups myself, textured it, and bedded it. After all was said and done i had about $400.00 in it. The Bell and Carlson was nice, but it still did not have the adjustable length of pull or the adjustable cheek wield you get with most chassis systems.

I recently just bought a McRees and do not think i will ever by a traditional type stock ever again. Scott at McRees is awesome to deal with and the adjustability is great.
Like most have learned here and you will soon learn if you havent already it is better to buy once cry once

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

I have an XLR chassis and a manners t4a and am planning on getting a Mcrees.

I think that the chassis (XLR and Mcrees) are a better deal than the manners/ other regular stocks. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my t4a, but for the money, I think a mcrees will probably be the best bang for your buck. offers adjustability, a magazine system, doesn't need bedded, and comes as a folder for less $$ and time than what a Manners would cost.

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

I personally have an XLR ordered for my project.....their customer service has been outstanding so far....They stay in touch and let you every step of the wayknow whats going on

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

Thanks for all the replies! I'm trying to find a drop in chassis that will keep my weight down(I don't think need a heavy gun for a 6mm). I plan on turning my 243 to 6mmbr because I am amazed with 6mm accuracy with such little felt recoil, and I think it will be good to continue to train my to shoot beyond 200yd. I also think I will be more fond of a composite stock. So from I've looked at on here that pretty much narrows me down to McMillan or manners. But my main two I'm eyeballing are the manners t3 and t4 mini chasis. The only place I can find them are on stockys. Is 880.00 and 900.00 for the two about the best price that can be found?

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

When you consider the cost of buying the stock and BDL conversion or DBM, your damn near the price of a chassis.
You can go with the PDC, MCree or XLR to keep the cost below 800.

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

If you find a better in stock price than stockys let me know

Re: Budget build beginning, what stock to get

If I didn't already have the stock (modified 40x), I'd go with a chassis system and not worry about buying bottom metal and fitting it.

Unless you've got the stock you want, go with the chassis that contains the DBM...you'll be glad you did.
