22 Hagar or Grendel

Well, I have been thinking of putting together a 6mm Hagar in an AR platform, and have recently put together a fast twist 22BRX, which I plan to work up loads for this spring. The idea of shooting the 90 Berger and other high BC .224 bullets got me excited. The BC's on these long for caliber .224 bullets is very high. So, I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool to get the same performance out of an easy AR set up. I thought of the Hagar, but of course the Grendel case would also be an option. Anyone know of this being done by someone already?

The .224 AR is an intriguing caliber. Looks fairly simple to convert 6.5 cases, and all you would need would be a 6.5 bolt and a barrel.

Unless you already have Grendel magazines, you would need some of those too to run this cartridge. I think the best high performance AR option that uses AR15 magazines is the 6x45. I'm sure other rounds are either out, or coming out, but the ability to use the same magazines as a 5.56 makes the 6x45 an attractive option.

I already have a 6.5G, so that is why I am intrigued. I wonder what the barrel life of the .224 AR is though...seems like it would be somewhat short.

Re: 22 Hagar or Grendel

take a look at the length of the Hagar case, it is longer than the grendel. A long bullet will intrude into that case and may lower velocity.

Good luck

Thanks, I didn't consider that. Now is probably not the best time to try and get into a new caliber anyway.

My Blackholeweaponry upper is in 22LBC which uses the grendel brass. 1:8 twist for the heavies. I have not shot this yet, but I definately like the idea. Maybe one of these days I will shoot this before ADD kicks in and I trade for something else.

Re: 22 Hagar or Grendel

Have any of yall tried out the new 90gr Bergers in .223 or any other cartridge for that matter? The listed BC is astounding, higher than any of Bergers 6mm bullets. With that said, how would you say the 90gr Bergers compare to 6mm 115 DTACs or some of the other 6mm high BC bullets? Does the Berger 90gr`s BC match up with real world trajectories/wind drift?

Robert at RWS was using a long-barreled Grendel-based .22; he is a great source of info---sounds like an awesome prairie dog weapon---
unaware of bullets he was using

Re: 22 Hagar or Grendel

I am using the 90 berger in the 22BRX that I just put together. That could push them around 3200 or more in my 7 twist barrel. I have only fireformed cases with just a random load to form the case, that was about 3/4". It is a brux barrel on a single shot savage action. The .224 Thunderbolt is being tested now using a fast twist barrel and the 90 bergers at about 2900 FPS. They fit the mag fine. That case is based on the Hagar. The BC on .224 Berger 90 at 3100+ is crazy. I hope to have a chance to try them at 1K yards in May after I work up a load.
