A-10 Warthog

Re: A-10 Warthog

thanks for sharing, my favorite jet of all time, and the A6

Re: A-10 Warthog

Thanks for posting. The A-10 has long been one of my favorite aircraft. I never get tired of seeing its power.

Re: A-10 Warthog

The A-10 is a great aircraft. Thanks for sharing.

Re: A-10 Warthog

I remember being a kid in the early 1990's and my dad would take me to the Wilkes Barre/Scranton armed forces airshow and there was always two things on my list to see. The F-117 and the A10 demonstrations.

I'm not sure the military knows what it's doing by replacing the A10 with the STOVL F-35... we'll have to wait and see how that turns out.

They would screw it up; too technical.

Re: A-10 Warthog

Nothing makes you feel better when you're taking a hike in A'stan with 40 of your closest friends than to hear those big turbofans circling over your head.

Re: A-10 Warthog

I used to have a camp just 15 miles from Fort Drum. WE used to take my son up in a fire tower and watch the A-10's fly by at tree top level! It was close!! The pics with my son are priceless.

There was a rumor going through Army circles, mainly from the pilots, that the Army was getting the A-10. This rumor is more than a couple years old, and is only a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt.

That being said, these things are gorgeous. The sound they make when they fire the 30mm is very reassuring.

Heard that rumor long before I retired. Been out 14 years now.

Re: A-10 Warthog

Absolutely excellent pictures, and thanks for sharing this. As it is, I clicked on the link that followed that spread, and there is a similar spread featuring a Nuclear (or Nukular, for those in D.C.) attack sub. Here

Quite good there, too.

As it is, I'm curious if anyone has in personal pics of any Iowa Class Battleships. This would be for a project I'm trying to work on. Now back to your regularly scheduled Warthog thread.

Re: A-10 Warthog

That was one of my favorite planes in the desert that and the. Ac 130 gun ships when FAC called em in we got a warm fuzzy feeling.....

Re: A-10 Warthog

I think the A-10 will be replaced with something faster and more survivable, but whether that describes the F-35 remains to be seen. Precision LGBs with cockpit selectable fuses, the small diameter bomb, and the new targeting pods have opened up a whole new world in CAS.

It is a cool airplane. Gun sounds awesome too. Their 30 is waaayyyy more powerful than the normal 20mm vulcan. In fact, the 20mm pretty much sucks for strafe IMHO. I dont know a single fighter pilot that doesn't want to shoot that gun.

But, if we woulda had the Fulda gap war the A-10 was built for they would have got hammered. If you are that slow you need to be nap of the earth like an apache, and you can't do CAS that way fixed wing. Has to be a low threat environment for them to operate really, like the AC-130.

They keep getting put on the chopping block and the next conflict saves them, thank goodness since the conflicts we have fought recently have been low threat surface-air. I hope they remain for awhile. They do great work and the AF has pretty much perfected gaining air dominance early in a conflict, so radar threats won't be up for long. Once the radar threats are down, turn em loose I say.

The Army criticizes the AF for phasing out the A-10 which is funny since the real problem with CAS these days is getting the ground commanders to clear you hot. Doesn't matter what aircraft you have if the colonels on the ground are too scared of killing too many people. I can't count the number of times I landed with bombs that should have been dropped but the ground commanders were too worried about what CNN would say. I cant help but think about what that sensitivity has cost our nation in American blood and treasure. Guess that is what modern warfare is...strategy governed by public opinion poll rather than desire to win.

Re: A-10 Warthog

We had 1-2 Warthogs about 40% of the time during our ops if not Apaches or F-18's. Nothing gives you chills more than that GAU unloading from a couple hundred feet up and still feeling the pounding in your chest and gear. Definitely an air asset that makes you feel invincible on the ground at times!

And the ever lingering thought that I may face a court martial if I'm good at my job.

I have a demilled GAU 8 barrel left over from a project in my garage. See it every day when I get in my truck and it still awes me. The first lots of ammo weren't quite so impressive, though.

Re: A-10 Warthog

Awesome pics and article. The amount of damage to the side of that armored ground vehicle was amazing.
