Ejector Marks

Spent the afternoon breaking in the barrel on my new GAP10 with its first 20 rounds. When I got home I started looking over my brass and noticed some serious ejector marks on the brass. The rifle ran flawlessly and never had any problems ejecting spent cases. So is this just a case of good strong ejector or something more serious like a gas timing problem?

Couple of details. I was shooting in the cold. The temp was 20 degrees and snowing. I was shooting 175gr FGGM.

Re: Ejector Marks

For this session I was using FGGM 7.62x51, which is head stamped FC and the year 12. I also have FGGM 308win and it is head stamped FC 308win.

This is strange. FGMM, to me, was mild when I last used it several years ago.

And, the label was ".308Win". So, in addition to the label, there must be something different about his ammo.

Hotter?

Re: Ejector Marks

In my SR-25 (first production model) I get similar ejector swipes and galling. When I reload with Federal cases, I'm lucky to get 2 loadings out of them. I can 3-4 loadings using Remington, Hornady or Winchester brass.

Federal brass is softer than other brands. On some lots of factory 168 FGMM, my rifle stretches the primer pockets on the first firing. There was an early production run of hornady 168 A Max TAP ammo that blew primers in my SR-25. I contacted Hornady regarding this and they sent me a newer production sample and that ammo shot fine in my autoloader.

Gas guns are touchy as to the burning rates of the powders. You have to be aware of this when reloading for them.

Re: Ejector Marks

I have about 800 rounds of 175gr FGGM on hand and another 420 spent cases cleaned and ready to go once my press gets here. I'm not in love with Federal brass, it's just what I saved last year before getting into reloading this year. During my reloading research I did read a lot about Federal brass being kind of soft/crappy. However, I never saw these kind of marks with my N6. I just want to make sure there's not an issue with the rifle.

I think you should ask GAP, not a bunch of us hacks. GAP has a vested interest in your rifle working properly and kicking ass.

See what they think.

Turbo, sorry but I don't have that option available to me.

Re: Ejector Marks

I doubt the rifle is the problem. Federal brass sucks for semis. Use Winchester or better, Lake City, but not machine gun brass. If at all possible, use new brass. Someone else's brass could be nothing but trouble.

Freeze the brass before loading it and it will be harder.

Load 41.5 grains of IMR 4895 with 168 gr smk and a non-magnum primer and be happy. If this load doesn't shoot there's a gun problem.
