Im looking at entering a local shooting event and the primary type of shooting is a timed event where aquiring the target needs to be done fast while transitioning from a close target then to a far target. The meet has a 600 yard max range. Evidently they shoot anywhere from 75 yards to 600yards. No doping the scope would be practical due to time limits. The reticle style and turrets MOA vs. Mils is what im after. FFP or SFP? so many options!

SFP or FFP doesn't have anything to do with it.

Any MIL or MOA based reticle will work just fine for this. Just like socks or underwear, nobody can tell you which one is best. It's about which one you like the best.

I personally prefer the more uncomplicated reticles like the NF MLR, Leupold TMR or the Premier Gen 2 Mildot.

It's more about you being in communion with it and knowing right away which little hash mark you are looking at. Practice makes perfect.

Thanks Fargo, im leaning towards a NXS 3.5-15 power SFP scope with the MOAR reticle. I currently have a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25 power with a TMR and Im very happy with it as I understand it well. In practice, im turning the Mark 4 down to 12.5 and using my 2 minute marks as 4 minutes. It working out well, I just want a little less power. The NXS will go on my AR10. Thanks for the input. I will keep it simple for sure MOA MOA and SFP and simply put in more seat time!

What's simpler than looking at the reticle and it being the right amount of graduation with no need to do math and remember what power you are on?

Can you make a SFP work? Yup but with all the good FFP scopes around why would you want to?

Re: What style reticle for Holdover type competitions?

I'd go with something FFP if I were you that way you can be at any power range and your hold over will be accurate. In a match conditions may dictate using a different power range that makes the math for your holds on a sfp very difficult as opposed to not even having to think about it on a ffp.

Also, if you don't want to dial at all I recommend the hours h59 or G2dmr "christmas tree" type reticles. Those reticles were designed so you do not have to dial to score accurate hits. I will admit that I tend to be more accurate when I dial elevation and hold for wind instead of having to hope I'm in the exactly the perfect spot when I hold for both elevation and on my H59. Then again I still score consistent hits to 600yds (max at my range) on a 8in plate when I just do holds.... The group just isn't as pretty as when I dial and can be more precise.

Very good points. Add to that a zero stop if/when you dial, and it eliminates another potential error type. Lots of good options in the marketplace.

What match are you gearing up for by chance? It sounds a little like one of my local matches where I hold rather than dial.
