I know you should not leave batteries in your NV gear but how long is too long. I tend to pull my batteries when I put it in the safe but I am concerned that on the D760, over time, it will wear out the screw or insert. I use use the high end lithium batteries for it and they last quite a bit longer.

How long should/can you leave batteries in your NV or IR?

thanks.

Re: Battery Care and feeding for NV....

As with all aluminum housings covers with threads, yours is a common concern. The common concern is that the battery springs that need to be compressed when closing the housing door with batteries in place provides the perfect opportunity to mis-align the threads when addressing the closure knob. Its the misalignment wear, not aligned wear that is the real problem. The trick is to eliminate the potential misalignment.

The solution is to learn to close the door by not holding on to the thumbs screw, but rather the front edge of the door panel. Let the threaded thumb stud hang free. When the batteries are compressed, the seal in its proper place and with the locking threads properly in-line, then gently screw it home with the thumb knob. Keep the threads lightly oiled, very lightly.

Too long is:

1. When the batteries become depleted to the point they will not provide the service life required....unknown unless you take them out and measure them or address your log with usage.

2. Past the point they start to leak....rare and unknown.I have seen just about every brand of battery leak. God knows why.

IMO, take them out if you don't need to have them in for any period of time greater than one week. Store everything in a cool location. Load matched charge sets only, as in never add a new battery to an ok older one.

If you have a Harbor Freight anywhere near you, they sell a volt/ohm meter for $4.99 that is pretty accurate, given the price. Don't wait for signs of leakage to remove the batteries. If it uses a 123 three volt battery and you get a reading below 2.70v, take it out. You can carry the meter in your kit. If it breaks, the next one is a lot cheaper than repairing your NV. My .02.
