I am fairly new to Gun Broker and hope somone can help me. I purchased a gun a while back and everything went fine. So tonight I purchased some ammo. Different seller. The seller only takes "Money Order / Certified Check, PayPal." Thats fine. So I try to go through the "checkout process" and it isn't there. It is actually blacked so that it can't be selected on the gun broker page. So I contact him that I am having trouble paying him.

    This is his response:

I take PayPal as long as you add the necessary 3% to cover PayPal fees. Also, please do the transaction as a "gift" and include no words alluding to guns/ammo, since PayPal doesn't allow transactions of that nature.

"I'm not sure what the problem is, as I can't view the same options as you do. You can always go to the PayPal site directly. Please use the email address of *******@hotmail.com.

As far as the license, can you scan and email it? Or if your phone has a camera, you can take a picture and email it.

Let me know if you have any problems."

So I am thinking doesn't this transaction need to be processed through gun broker? Right now I feel like I am sending a payement and a copy of my personnal info from my drivers license to who knows where . It is probably okay, but I am leary.

This is my response to his:

    Hello ****,

Have you not activated your “Checkout Process”? I think this would be a good way to keep the transaction clean so I know how much to pay, where to send the payment to , etc. I need a statement that shows purchase amount, shipping, etc.

If you would like we could use “Tradiator”. It is “Gun Brokers” escrow company. It would protect both of us and help make our transaction clean. I already have a “Tradiator” account set up or you could set one up.

    Let me know.

I am now waiting a response. Am I being paranoid or do I have a legitimate concern?

Thanks and all help is appreciated.

Forgot to mention he only had a history of one sale before tonight, however it was reported as a good experience by the buyer so I felt safe.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Just send a USPS Money Order and mail it certified mail so that you can track it and confirm receipt of the money to only the individual that you sent it to. They have to sign for it and produce ID before they can do so. It's worked fine for me for several transactions on GB and in the For Sale forums here.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Gift option does not charge him the 3% so he is tryin to scam you right there. The gift option gets around it or if done by cc....it makes you the giver pay the extra fees on your end.

Also the gift option gives you zero recourse as a buyer, So if your already worried which it sounds like you are....stay away from the gift option. Using paypal and adding the fees...you can always dispute it if needed and say you did not get it and have a chance of getting your money back.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Well he's already scamming you for 3%, he's charging it through pay pal, then collecting it by gift payment.
I'd get his address and send MO.

    Casey D,

I am liking your plan. Does he need the license number, or just the name and birthdate? I was thinking of blacking out the license number. Don't want to give him anymore info than needed. I assume that it is just to verify that I am 18.

This. Cost about 5-10 bucks but totally worth it.

Thanks to all. The help is great. Been lurking and enjoying this website for years. Glad to be a part of it.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

    I-rep,

After learning that it is against paypal policy to trade ammo (I just learned this), would I realy have any recourse if something went bad. I suppose I could call it "goods" or "products". However when it got down to the nut cuttin to collect from a bad deal would they deny any help in getting money back. I assume if it got bad they would eventually find out it was for ammo. For me paypal was originally how I wanted to do this, however I am not sure I could keep myself protected with them.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Sounds WAY to shady to me. Nailing you with 3% plus saying it is a gift is actually 6%. Back out. Find a reputable source for ammo unless you have money to burn.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Id follow your course. If he backs out, fuck him.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Yea, I got slapped this morning for using paypal to sell an "ar-15 lower reciever" (dumbass friend put this in the little box). They made me agree not to do it again and check the little box LOL

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

I have been selling mags and ammo on gunbroker lately. I accept money orders and paypal but only if sent as a gift. It is not about saving the 3%. It is about not letting an antigun company make money off of my gun related transaction. Initially i was only taking money orders but several buyers asked if they could pay thru paypal as a gift instead, so i started including that option for payment.
that said i would not send money as a gift unless the seller has a good feedback with many transactions.

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

I have never had to send anyone a copy of my license on GB. I'm not sure what is up with that??

Re: Need some help and advice with gun broker purchase

Gunbroker ask the license for em to confirm that you're real. I know, it was a shock for me as well when I sold my Mosin Nagant, but once that was clear, I made the sale and I paid a small fee for my sale.

Go with money order. I've had problems with paypal in the past and I dont trust it.
