Been shooting a box stock Rem 700p .338 LM for the past year. Current mods are a custom muzzle brake, bolt knob, bipod, and a SWFA SS HD on an EGW 20 moa base. I'm pleased with its performance based on the time and money I have invested. We are working on a new range of 1200 plus so I'm lookin to change things up a little...either further modify this setup or build a new setup entirely...my reservation on a new build is wait time and more $...originally I was gonna setup up to a NF scope and a custom stock...but I'm trying to figure out just how accurate the factory action and barrel can be? Any help, ideas, and opinions are.greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

biggest improvement for accuracy will be a barrel change unless you are one of the lucky ones and have a good barrel
biggest improvement for fit and feel will be a stock change,
Mcmillan or Manners, but be sure to bed it

Decided on my scope....stuck between a manners or mcmillan stock.....but barrel im unsure on....

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

That is a great rifle to modify and make into what ever you want, I would recommend working with what you have instead of starting a new build. I have a remington 700 sps in a .308 one of the first upgrades I did was replace the factory trigger. I went with a Timney and that was the best upgrade I did! I would highly recommend swapping out the trigger. After that an upgraded stock like BBK85 said, you cant go wrong with a manners or mcmillan, I ordered a manners T4A back in Dec and I am still waiting for that stock, expect to wait 4-6 months for a custom stock. Getting your action trued and putting a custom barrel on there would be badass as well.... lots of room to improve this rifle and have something full on custom, you have a great platform to start from. Good luck man.

I have a 700P and in the HS stock. I have upgraded the triggger to a Timney and will be bedding it this weekend. Not sure how much bedding will improve things, but it can't hurt.

...a good, stress-free, one-to-one bedding job is one of the pillars of accuracy, take it seriously and do the best you can and it will pay dividends...good luck!

Will do, I have watched a ton of youtube and read everything here I could. The stock is prepped. I will be mixing the Devcon early Saturday and give it a go. I am confident it will turn out nice. Thanks for the encouragement.

Like a lot of guys on here, I can't say enough good things about Manners stocks. They are also known for exceptional customer service. I have 2 (T4 and T4A). Here is a pic of my 3rd, a T3 in Midnight. Accurate Ordnance is putting it on my AAC-SD, along with Badger bottom metal and a bedding job...

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

I had the 700P MLR in 338, and started down the road you are on. Changed bolt handle, flutted bolt, new break ect. Then I ordered a barrel and while waiting on it I decided to go custom. Sold my 700P and got a stiller TAC 338 action, Jewel trigger, and then a XLR Chassis. My 700P was a good rifle, but the new one is sweet.

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

You can't go wrong with a Bartlein Barrel. Expect to wait 6 months for a barrel from then. You can also check out grizzly.com or bugholes.com to see if they have a barrel with the specs that you want, length, contour, and twist rate and have a barrel in a week. Bugholes will have some Rock Creek, Brux, and Obermeyer barrels, they are also really nice barrels. I don't own a 338 so I could not recommend a twist rate. Good luck and continue to ask questions.

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

I ordered the Midnight camo as well on my stock, looks really good man, have you put it all together yet? I would love to see a picture of the complete rifle in the midnight camp!

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

For what it's worth, I just finished a Rem 700P 338LM rebuild. I didn't do anything with the trigger or stock yet---looking into a new stock. I got a Lilja 34" fluted barrel, a J&P Recoil-Eliminator, and a NightForce NXS 8-32x56mm NPR-1 Zero-Stop scope.
I am really pleased with its performance so far.
I like the rebuild, as you can do it piecemeal, and as your budget allows.

Re: Modifying a 700p .338

It's not all together yet, maybe in a few weeks. Like the OP, I have a perfectly fine working rifle that could use an accuracy boost. The ACC-SD has a less than perfect stock and trigger so I figured I'd start there. Of course the trigger (I'm using a Timney) is the least expensive improvement. A barrel and action job will come later. One thing I like about changing one component at a time, aside from spreading the cost out over time, is you can see that individual components effect on accuracy. The OP also mentioned shooting at 1,200. Assuming this will be from prone, a more suitable stock would make a big difference over the 700p.
