Gunsmithing Barrel seating depth

I have a savage that will not extract and a no-go guage will close in the chamber. The brass is stretching + .015 after firing. Instead of seating the barrel on to a go-guage, can I seat the barrel on to a resized case from my die? The gun is a 110ba in 338. This well documented problem of FTE on this particular rifle seems to have many band aids or crutches but I am trying to fix the real problem. I know, use lapua brass, polish the chamber etc will work but that just masks what is really wrong.

Re: Barrel seating depth

any reason you can't loosen the nut, set the barrel back with a go gauge?

The stretch is a bit much in my opinion...I'd just HS the barrel properly.

Re: Barrel seating depth

There is no reason I cannot use a go gauge to set the barrel. Since I only use one type of brass, Ruag, and the same FL die, I was wondering if there was a reason not to use a resized case in place of the gauge to get lower tolerances, stretching, etc. I'm not opposed to Lapua brass I just have massive amounts of Ruag.

Re: Barrel seating depth

You can headspace that puppy anywhere you want, but the desirable place is where new brass will fit. After you fire it do you bump the shoulder on resizing? Are you sure that you are not over resizing your brass. That much stretch would cause head sepertation on a lesser case after several firings.

Re: Barrel seating depth

I am almost certain I over resized the brass by following the instructions of RCBS. Pretty sure the die was seated too deep and pushed the shoulder back too far. I had a mold made and the smith said the chamber was in spec. Now I have about 150 pieces wasted unless you guys know of a fix other than firing and pounding them out with a cleaning rod. Thanks everyone.

Re: Barrel seating depth

You could back off your powder charge to a medium charge. Then, seat the bullets hard into the rifling (.030 or so) to hold the case against the boltface and fireform the brass back to the original size. I would seek out an experienced reloader if this is beyond your handloading experience. No offense intended. If you google "foreforming 6 Dasher brass" this will give you a few options. Accurate Shooter has a good article on fireforming brass. If in doubt just toss the brass and move on. PM me if you have any questions.

It might pay to spend a few bucks on some case inspection tools. Your accuracy will improve as well. I concur with the above poster. I am not versed on best practice reloading with that caliber so i am in the camp of researching best case prep practices for your ammo. It may be a good idea to anneal your brass if you have fired it a few times anyway.

Good luck
