Rifle Scopes Scope questions for 22LR

Searching for scope for my Savage Mark II FV-SR .22LR rifle (use for target, plinking and fun precision shooting) and I had a few questions.

* Do ya'll think that I would need it to be parallax adjustable (i.e. side focus or adjustable objective) If so, I think I would like side focus better as far as ease of use, but not a deal killer.
* Want variable power, but what lower magnification rwould you recommend? Would you want 3, 4 or 5 for the minimum?

- I think I like the Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 30mm side focus mildot (Midway exclusive) for the money and I could always move it over to a heavier caliber rifle. But I don't know if the low end is low enough or will be fine for closer shots.

- The Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x40 1" mildot (Midway exclusive) seems good as well for the money (cheaper) but it doesn't have parralax adjustment. Do you think this a big deal for a 22LR?

- I also liked the Burris MTAC 3.5-10x42 or 4.5-14x42 30mm mildot adjustable objective

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

This is exactly the same boat I'm in and have posted something very similar. I'm trying to narrow down the first two options you mentioned as well. Parallax was something of concern to me. I guess I'm really trying to gauge what top mag. power I can live with...it's hard not to convince me that more is not always better (but I know it's true). For me, I want to be able to easily spot .22 holes at 100 yards for papaer punching. Just don't know if I can get by with 10x.

Depends, but for me its easier with a 15x up to 21x.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

Use the SWFA fixed 20X on my Savage MK II 22LR trainer. Rear focus and no parallex adjustment, but works well for my 64 year old eyes at 50-100 yds. Can't beat this combo for the price.

Is this just for punching paper? I know for the sake of a "trainer" it seems like less power seems to be the idea for easier spotting missed shots because of more FOV. I too like the higher mag tho.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

Okay..what about this deal?

Rifle has base from factory, but I don't know specifics. So for additional elevation, unless factory base already meets this (was unsure to ejection port measurement)

Base if don't use factory: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/615198/...tion-port-matte or http://www.midwayusa.com/product/331986/...tion-port-matte

Rings (unsure as to low or medium - recommendations?): http://www.midwayusa.com/product/116860/burris-1-xtreme-tactical-picatinny-style-rings-matte-low or http://www.midwayusa.com/product/377454/burris-1-xtreme-tactical-picatinny-style-rings-matte-medium

Scope Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40 mil/mil: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/598484/...t-reticle-matte

Butler Creek Scope Covers (Can anybody help confirm the sizes?):
Rear #13? - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/731192/..._vc=sugv1598484
Front #26? - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1168106...ront?cm_vc=U112

I think I like some of the other scopes that have side focus, but this scope selection leaves me some money for the rings and covers, etc.

My only two concerns is if I would need the parralax adjustment for closer shots and/or higher magnification. With the low end being 3x I don't think it would be necessary. However, with my eyes a higher magnification may be better.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

You are all set. I have a SWFA AS 10X, MIL DOT, on the same base, with Vortex 30mm rings . Plenty of come up room, and great scope to practice holdovers. Have fun!

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

To help me solve this more magnification dilemma as well (and this may help you), barrow a scope with similar glass quality and look through it at 10x at some targets with .22 holes. In this case 100 yards. Might help you in your decision. Of course you can just use the math formula or check the specs (on the website ) to find target size at 50 and 100 yards.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

I am using the Weaver grand slam tactical 3-10 from Midway on my 22. It works very well on a trainer. I was hesitant to use it, because of no paralax adjustment but that has not been an issue.

I originally picked up the Bushnell fixed 10X with mil/mil adjustment. It was fine for 75 yards and beyond, but anything under was out of focus. Might have been the 55 year old eyes I am using with the setup.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

With the EGW base on my Savage Mark II, "low" rings (0.25" from base to bottom of scope tube) worked fine with the Bushnell 10x40mm.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

I have the Weaver GS Tactical 3-10x40 on my FV-SR with Boyd Tacticool. I'm running medium height Burris Signature Zee rings with SHIMS! to add 20MOA elevation.

Low rings would be ideal IMO, but I already had the rings, didn't want to buy a 20MOA base, and don't have cheekweld problems with the Tacticool.

The GS Tactical works great for 50yd shooting @ 10x, and if I want to shoot closer I simply reduce magnification slightly and then parallax doesn't seem to be an issue. I'd have gotten a Viper HS 5-15x44 to match my 223AI and 260...but the $200 price delta buys a lot of CCI SV.

Thanks for your reply. This is exactly what I was wanting to hear since I just placed my order last night for the Weaver GS Tactical with low rings and a 20 MOA base.

I'll have to look into the Boyds Tacticool stock. I've read where alot of guys have put one on their Savage Mark II.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

For future reference: I just ran out to the shop and measured the height from the top of the barrel to the top of the EGW 20 MOA rail. It comes out to 0.475". With this dimension and the objective bell diameter of the scope under consideration, it becomes pretty easy to calculate what will fit and what won't.

Yea, I was trying to order everything so I didn't actually have any of the items to measure and no one around here has this stuff, or at least in stock anyways.

Thanks for the input and I will remember this next time if I have some of my parts to be able to measure from. Thanks.

Re: Scope questions for 22LR

My FV-SR is wearing a EGW 20moa base, Weaver GST 3-10 in med. weaver tac rings. It's worked very well so far. Just can't decide on the Boyds Tacticool, or the Rhineland Leapord stock.
