Greetings,

This is my first post here on this forum. A lot of great info is contained here. I lurked here while building my first .308 rig the past few months. I finished my build with a 700 sps varmint, B&C stock, Timney 510 and SWFA SS 20x42. I have decided to go ahead and upgrade the optics. My intentions are paper punching primarily within 600 yards but want to be able to shoot F-Class eventually as skills progress. I will have opportunities to shoot out to 1k every few months, so I want a scope that is capable. I like the higher magnification (that's why I went with 20x vs 10x in the SS originally). I had the opportunity to look through a Nightforce 5-22 NXS at dusk and was immediately sold on the clarity of the optics. I had originally planned on purchasing the 12-42x56 nxs, but a few things jumped out at me as I researched/reviewed more. First, there is a disclaimer on their website that states it is being discontinued. Does anyone know why? Next, as someone mentioned on another forum, there is limited elevation MOA adjustment (45 MOA) I am running a 20 MOA base, so will I be good to go for ranges 100 - 1000 yards? I had picked the NXS model over the benchrest model due to being more robust and having side focus. My budget is roughly $2K. Sorry for so many questions, I just want to get this right the first time, especially with the cost of these scopes. Thanks in advance.

Re: Nightforce 12-42x56 nxs

I have a NF NXS 12-42x56 and it is great. The elevation limitation can be an issue, but with a canted mount I'd wager you'll be alright. I went to my first 1000yd IBS match yesterday and the scope of choice was by far the NF Benchrest series.

I imagine NF is discontinuing this scope due to lack of interest. The lack of travel turns off many, and the new NF 15-55x coming out might crowd the market.

I don't know what the price point is on their new Competition 15-55x is, but it should be worth a look. It saves 6-7 ounces and has the new ED glass which is supposed to be clearer.

Barker, the 12-42x56 is a superb scope for what you want. With regards to the lack of elevation in the scope I opted for a custom 25moa base on my Rem 700 which is a dedicated FT/R rifle. I suppose Nightforce has decided to discontinue the model because the new 15-55x52 competition brings so much more to the plate as a dedicated target scope, more elevation, no illumination andand lighter weight, but I don't think you can go wrong picking a used 12-42x56, I might opt for the new competition model if I was buying new though.

Shipping next month.

To M1.....I would jump on the NXS's while vendors are clearing them out. It's a great buy right now.

Re: Nightforce 12-42x56 nxs

Thanks for all the quick replies. I really liked the competition scope they came out with. The only things that kept me from it was that it was a little outside of my budget (minor issue) and I disliked both reticles they offered (major issue). For those of you that have the 12-42 scope, if you had the chance to do it again, would you buy the same scope again? Also, were you able to run it with medium rings since it has that 56mm bell or did you have to go high rings?

Re: Nightforce 12-42x56 nxs

I have one and I know you can get 30 Moa or even 40 Moa from spuhr mounts and it gets you where you need to be at 1k. I'll have to say that the 8-32 with zero stop is more my speed now.

Re: Nightforce 12-42x56 nxs

Thanks again for all the info. I feel better about my initial choice and decided to make the nightforce plunge. I just placed an order with Chris's company for the 12-42x56NXS. I think NF dico'ing that scope is a blessing in disguise for me. Now the eager wait for the brown truck of goodies begins!
