Wasn't sure where to put this, but I thought I figured you guys would appreciate this.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

Never saw one of those hats.........neat though.

I was in the Recon Plt (Recondos), HHC 2/502nd Inf, 101st Abn Div in Vietnam (when the 101st was still airborne)

We wore black berets with the 101st Arrow Head Patch.

I still have mine, but its getting pretty ragged.

I was a bit younger back then, this was taken in '67. I'm the thrid guy from the left.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

Sir,

Thank you for your service and thank you for sharing, way cool! If you don't mind me asking did you actually attend the 20 day MACV Recondo school in Vietnam between 1966-1970?

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

No sir, I was suppose to but we are aways too short handed.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

Kraig:
Small sections (and individuals) in the 101st are on jump status.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

Well thats good to here.

There is something about airborne troops that set them apart.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

Yes, we wore the blue berets in 1975-1978.

I too served withe 2/502 scout plt, represented the same patch and deployed with em (OIF 1 & 3). Part of our tests to get into scouts was to know our past... Thanks much for your service. I'll follow up with a pic of our sniper section PT shirt (sports the recon sign as well).

I looked as young as you brother.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

I'd sure like to see the picture of the PT Shirt.

Back when I was a pup, we did PT in fatigues and jump books.

Now getting out of bed is enough PT for me.

I just got a chill up my back.... I too served withe 2/502 scout plt, represented the same patch and served two tours with em (OIF 1 & 3). Part of our tests to get into scouts was to know our past... Thanks much for your service. I'll follow up with a pic of our sniper section PT shirt (sports the recon sign as well).

Different unit, similar story. I was in Bco. 3-21 in the first two Stryker Bde. and was for a (very) short time, the ratelo, "Gimlet 6 Romeo". So imagine my surprise when, as I'm laying on the table waiting for the anesthesiologist to put me to sleep for an appendectomy, I find that same person was the last Gimlet 6 Romeo before the unit was pulled out of Vietnam and reactivated --the very last ground combat unit in the country.

I was the very first ratelo after reactivation in APR02, so in a way, that job went from him to me. Small world, huh?

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

From what I understand about the blue beret is that if your division has a certain percentage of personel air assault qualified the blue beret was authorized. I was told the last time this happened was in the seventies, so it matches up.
Lots of 101st guys from AVN in my unit now. (AVN )

Just checked with a guy that was in 101st, said this was part of the history of the 101st, hasn't been authorized in a very long time, and the unit also got a guidon streamer as well when the criteria was met. Pretty cool little piece of history you have there.

Re: 101st Geronimo Beret

Very few people in the 101st are on jump status. As far as I know, just the 2 Pathfinder Companies (understandable) and the Air Assault School instructors for some reason(not understandable).

Ironically the Pre-Ranger Course was part of the Air Assault School and it's instructors were not on Airborne status.

Other than that there used to be an Artillery unit from Fort Bragg stationed there on jump status but not sure they are still around.

You can dig around the Heraldry site for unit info.
