Hey guys, need some info on ffp for varmint hunting. Mainly use for coyote hunting when possible shots may be up close(50yds and closer), and still be good for out to 1000yds. I have never used a ffp reticle but am interested because of all the pub here on the hide. Interested in the Vortex Viper PST 4x16x50. Thanks

Re: FFL plane for varmint hunting

You must mean FFP. FFP scope wpuld be great for coyote hunting. FFP scopes are great all around as it doesn't matter what power you are on when holding over or holding the wind. Weather MIL or MOA, 1 MIL is 1 MIL weather you are on the lowest power or the max power. Really great when you are shooting and ther is a ton of mirage. You can back the power down and still do your holds without having to do any math ir guess work.

And I thought you wanted to take your gun dealer on a trip.

Don't rule out 2nd FP. At 1000, many FFP reticles @ 20x or 25x will obscure a coyote, forcing you to back off the power.

Backing off the power doesn't change how much of the target is covered by a FFP reticle.

People miss out that it's SFP reticles that get smaller relative to the target at increased magnifications - FFP's just stay the same with respect to the target across the entire mag range.

Re: FFL plane for varmint hunting

A .1 mil reticle thickness at 1000Y only covers 3.6"s so only 1.8" at 1000Y for the normal .05 mil reticle thickness for most FFP scopes.

Re: FFL plane for varmint hunting

I use a Bushnell 3-12x44 on a gun that I set up specifically for coyotes. Some would suggest that the reticle is too small to see the mil marks on it's lowest setting, but it really isn't an issue since you won't likely need to use any hold-overs, etc. at the ranges that you would use the lower power. Personally, I think predator/varmint hunting is the perfect setting for a FFP scope, since you don't always have time to think/worry about what power setting you're on, as you would with a SFP scope.

I always find these amusing. Is it just me?
