Let me start off by mentioning that this site, and its members, have been a great tool in understanding long range shooting. now, onto the topic. im am currently browsing the internet for an ar-10 platform that would suit my needs as a long range weapon. i want it chambered in .308 with capabilities of reaching out to 800-1000yds. im looking for a platform in and around the $1,800 range. i already own a trijicon accupoint 5-20x50 i am happy with. just need a rifle (other than my 204) to put it on. i want it to be for target and when season hits, large deer and elk. i found this on dpms' website. and thats literally about it. i have had a hard time finding any reviews (web and youtube) on this rifle. it looks like a solid shooter but i wanted to bounce it off you guys in hopes that someone has gotten their hands on it. thanks for any input in advance...

Re: DPMS 3gi .308 questions

I'm not an expert, and I think one might be along shortly.

What ammo are you going to use? I think that 308 will loose steam out toward 800 yards, dropping subsonic. That will certainly affect accuracy at longer distances, out past 800.

As a gas gun, you're gonna loose velocity compared to a bolt gun in 308 with the same barrel. At 18", you're gonna loose some velocity compared to a gas gun with a longer barrel.

Just by doing a little web search, it looks like 3G1 is designed for three gun matches. I have the JP version of the VTac handguards on my two LR DPMS rifles. I like them for their diameter and cleanliness.

I have the JP trigger in my LR65. I like it. But it is very light light, single stage. Works well as a long range target rifle for me, but I don't know if I would like it as well in my LR308 carbine.

With my limited knowledge, I guess I would question the accuracy of it at very long distances. Probably great out to 600 yards. Probably very good even out to 800. But with one condition being that window of 800 to 1000? It might not be the best option.

Re: DPMS 3gi .308 questions

Just from that image on the dpms site the gun appears to be an 18" with rifle length gas. This should get to 800-1k depending on how well the gun shoots. Some dpms rifles shoot lights out, some don't. That's the nature of dpms and budget .308 rifles. Normally, pre-panic I would recommend a LMT MWS but the dpms would likely work too.

A .308 gas gun can most definitely get to 1k without running out of steam. It will do well at 800 but will require the shooter to do his part consistently (like any gun) beyond that. I have a gas gun and have made hits to 1k

My scope selection for that range would differ from yours as the Trijicon scopes are not set up to be dialed as far as I remember.

Re: DPMS 3gi .308 questions

thanks for the input. the accupoint scope has only a 46moa adjustment in elevation, but slap a 15 or 20 moa rail on there and i think i can make it work. this build isn't necessarily for 'top precision'. i just want to be able to hit coyotes in that range. not going for groups. i understand a bolt gun would give me the absolute best shot groups out at further ranges, but i am willing to sacrefice that for quicker follow on shots.

Re: DPMS 3gi .308 questions

With the current Scarce Market even a DPMS .308 is going to be hard to find, and even if you do People are asking for A LOT for them.

The ammo supply is also drying up Fast for the .308s. Do you Reload? It's a terrible time to get into the Semiauto Market especially for a AR10 Platform.

You might want to consider starting with a AR15 SPR first if you just want to Hunt coyotes and small Deer/Game. It'll be a lot easier to get one and probably "Slightly" cheaper.

With that being said I was lucky enough to put together a Armalite AR10 just right before all this panic hit. This was a True "Budget" gun as all of the furniture on it are used and got some great deals on them too!

I got a Hell of a Deal on the Barely Used (25rds down the tube) AR10 Rifle and just upgraded it over time hunted for the best deals. Came out to be about the price of a brand new Base Model AR10 and shoots well under 1 MOA. It's probably the best deal I've gotten and probably ever will get in a LONG TIME...

It is a PAIN To FEED any .308 ARs for sure!

Re: DPMS 3gi .308 questions

In regards to your scope:
My 24" barrled bolt action .308 requires 43.2 MOA of elevation to reach 1000 pushing 175gr SMKs. You likely wont get the entire 46 mil of elevation out of that. Assuming you get 2/3rds of your elevation that gives you around 30 moa availble add a 20 MOA base that gets you to 1000 my worry would be that your gun will not be pushing the rounds as fast so you will see more drop and that your zero might be closer to the middle range of travel if either of these are the case then you end up really being limited in your ability to reach out that far by dialing. You should still be able to hold assuming you have a reticle with some sort of refernce in it but it will limit you at these extreme ranges.

As for the rifle I am sure other guys will have more information for you including hands on experince.

Re: DPMS 3gi .308 questions

@ hogtooth, that is a sweet setup. i plan on reloading in the future, but as it stands now, i think its frowned upon to reload ammo in a barracks room.

@b3dlam thanks for the input. appreciate it.
