What are you guys using for bullets? I've got a GAP coming in 6.5 Creedmoor and starting to buy reloading supplies as I can find them.

How much mag length do you have?

How far are you going to be shooting?

Lapua Scenar 136/139gr, Hornady 140gr AMAX, Sierra 142gr MK.

Pretty much the creme de la creme.

Haven't measured the mags, running an AICS AX system with AI mags. Normally 600 yards is what ranges around here have that are close. Some 1000 yard matches a few times a year, training up to 1400 yards max and prairie dog shooting figure 1000 or less.

Go with the 140 Berger. Got a Gap Crusader Creedmor. 1:8.5. The way GaP throats their rifles you can load the vlds mag length and it still shoots lights out.

Damn that makes me want my rifle even more lol...nice shooting!

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

PS which Berger do you buy? I see they have a couple hunting and match if I remember correctly...is there really any difference?

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

I buy the hunting but there really is no difference. Bc is still the same, dimensions ect.... Really I buy what ever I can get my hands on. Finally broke down and bought a lot of 500. Should last a while

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

yea I couldn't tell the difference either...wonder why they have two versions? I see the hunting models more often and that lead me to believe maybe they weren't intended for the best accuracy.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

I think the hunting bullet has a thinner jacket than the target version. Otherwise there is no difference.

So does this just give you better expansion? Does the thinner jacket have any impact on accuracy or velocity you can push the bullets?

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

I have shot the 130the vlds both in target and hunting and had no problems. Have shot many pigs and coyotes with both and the targets seem to penetrate all the way thru. Think the big deal is that the hunting bullets have thinner jackets and have more consistent exspansion. have shot the 140hybrids and penetrated all the way thru a 150lb pig dropping him in his tracks at 670yds. My opinion, either one will work fine

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

JSF nailed it; the hunting bullets have the old style (thinner) jackets. Not really a question of expansion as Berger's don't really "expand" in the classic sense. They explode or shatter, and manage to dump a tremendous amount of energy, like right NOW! Think of a small grenade going off inside the vitals, and you've got the idea. They can produce some spectacular kills, but won't give the sort of deep penetration you'd see from a more solidly constructed bullet like a Nolser Partition or one of the monolithic solids. All comes down to choosing your bullets carefully, and matching them to your particular hunting situations. Yes, the Match bullets have a somewhat thicker jacket, and Berger doesn't recommend them for hunting applications.

Bergers are like freaking Razor blades inside the animal. I have shot probably 60 critters with vlds. Most drop , those that don't I have never walked to where I shot the animal and find blood immediately. Kevin said it perfectly

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Bullets

130 Berger VLDs - I use the hunting version.
