Hello everyone! I wanted to tell the story of how my rifle came to be. I live in the high mountains of Colorado (11,500 ft) and regularly shoot at 12,000’+ altitude.

Here’s a picture of my shooting range (the arrows are pointing to my steel target):

500yardsmod.jpg

I decided that I “needed” a high precision bolt action rifle to add to my collection of other guns. I started by researching the kind of rifle that I wanted to base this around and finally came to the conclusion of the Remington 700.
I researched the round that would be best for me based on the following criteria:
- Most shooting done from 100 yards to 1000 yards
- I need to hump this in about 1 mile to shoot so it can’t be too heavy
- Plan on hunting deer and possibly elk
- I normally have moderate to high wind conditions so I need a high BC round
- I don’t reload now but plan on reloading in the future
- I’m always alone when I shoot so I can shoot a high volume in a day so I’d like to keep recoil down

This all led me to a 6.5mm short action round. I went back and forth between the 260 and the 6.5 CM but ended up going with the 260 based on more variety of factory rounds offered (both match and hunting) and reportedly easier loading from AICS mags.

Then I started searching on the classified section of this site and others for a stock that I could base this around. I found what I believe is a take-off from a Remington 700 Police. It also came with Atlas Worx bottom metal that accepts AICS mags.

I then started an extensive search for the right builder for me. I started by sending out a general email to more than two dozen builders telling them what I thought I was looking for, asking what experience they had with my planned setup, and a general idea of the cost. I was very impressed by how many responses I got, how quickly I received them, and how in depth the responses were.

After extended conversations with a few builders, I decided to go with Bob Racine at Southwest Precision (SWP) in Lake Havasu, AZ. Bob worked with me a ton before, during and after the build and I couldn’t be happier with how it went with him. We exchanged over 80 emails and numerous phone calls during the process.

Here’s some build process pictures:

10-Finish_Applied.jpg

So the build sheet for my rifle ended up being:
- Remington 700 SA RH blueprinted/trued by SWP
o Action, action threads, and action lugs are trued to the bolt centerline
o Receiver face is squared to the action centerline
o Bolt face and lugs are trued and hand lapped
- Krieger SS cut rifled barrel, 22” finished length, Heavy Palma contour, 1:9 twist, target crown (twist rate chosen due to my extreme altitude which comes with a very low barometric pressure)
- Chambered for .260 Remington with a PT&G Match Reamer
- HS Precision 5R stock with full length aluminum bedding block (painted by me)
- Atlas Worx bottom metal reworked by SWP
- Badger Ordnance oversized recoil lug (0.312” thick)
- Timney 510 adjustable trigger with safety adjusted to 3 lbs
- Barreled action bedded into stock by SWP
- SWP heavy knurl bolt knob
- Barreled action was media blasted to a matte finish and finished with black Cerakote
- EGW 0 MOA base bedded onto action by SWP
- TPS TSR steel 30mm rings (super low, 0.820”)
- Bushnell Elite Tactical 6500 3-12x44mm, 30mm tube, mil/mil, FFP, illuminated reticle (ET3124F)
- AICS mags (5 and 10 round)

And here it is finished. It weighs 12 lbs, 4 oz as pictured with 5 rounds in the mag:

I’ve attached the targets that my rifle shot with a match load and a hunting load.

I got out to shoot it today and it performed flawlessly.

I plan on keeping this rifle forever, rebarreling when necessary, and teaching my two young sons to shoot it some day.

I also wanted to thank everyone here on this site for all your knowledge that helped me understand what I was looking for.

Thanks!
Brent

Very cool!!!! And nice scenary!

Have you tried to work up a load for it yet?

I bought a Stiller action and Brux barrel through Southern Precision and had a local gunsmith thread and chamber (took 2 months). I put it together about 5 weeks ago and having fun with it. It's a 260 as well.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Very well purposely built rifle! No need for high end actions and crazy NXv mounts and truck axle barrels, just what works. I commend you on your build!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Thanks everyone for the comments!

I haven't worked any loads up for it as I want to shoot the factory loads that I have. I found a good deal through CheaperThanDirt for Cor-Bon Performance Match 139gr Lapua Scenar with Lapua brass (20 rounds for $33). So I have 400 rounds of that and when I shoot them (or most of them) I'm going to start reloading the Lapua brass with loads that I work up. I honestly just don't have the time right now to reload so I'm starting with the factory loads.

I also wanted to note that with the 44mm scope on low mounts I have a perfect cheek weld without anything extra needed.

Also, I had planned on going with a Rock Creek barrel but SWP's barrel order from April still hadn't gotten in yet so I went with the Krieger which was in stock at a distributor. SWP just told me a few days ago that Rock Creek stopped taking new orders due to their backlog.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Nicest "new guy" post I have seen

Really nice rifle. It shows that you can build a nice shooting rifle and not have to spend obscene amounts of money.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Wow, that's a nice range. Trying to get the family and my wife to move to Utah. Then we could have a range similar to that.
Beautiful rifle!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

another .260 that shoots bugholes, shocker. To me is the best short action caliber.
congrats on an awesome rifle build/caliber combo.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

that is absolutely a beautiful range.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Since everybody is liking my "private" shooting range, here's a picture of me standing up at the target location. This elevation is 12,170 feet. The mountains in the back are just over 14,000 feet.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Congrats man! Awesome stick and range!
I live in the Blue Ridge Mtns of NC and shoot from
2800-4000ft.....but, mercy you are at some serious altitude!
Keep truckin brother!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

My lungs feel squeezed just from looking at the pictures. Sweet rifle. Congrats and thanks for showing.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

awesome rifle and stuning shooting spot, it is official, I hate you bro.;)

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

I wish more people would post short stories like this. Awesome rifle man. Here in western PA its ridiculously hard to find a shot to 1000 yds. I will certainly be duplicating this type of story when I FINALLY choose what caliber I want. And if I need the rifle built. Stay safe.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Great story and range. I am getting together a rem 260 for my daughter to shoot long range. Tactical 30 action with krieger barrel and a HS precision stock, all bought from guys here on the hide. I am shooting a rem 260 now with heavy profile krieger bbl, remington 700 and macmillan stock. Thanks for posting the great photos. we just bought some land in northern Idaho.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Wow, what an awesome rifle and place to run it! Kudos to you sir.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Nice rifle and cool pics. Congrats, it was worth all your time and research!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Thanks for the compliments!

I wanted to add a few more pictures of the details on the rifle.

Disclaimer: these pictures aren't nearly as cool as the outdoor pictures but it's snowing and 10* outside!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

And yes I definitely need the scope level! The mountains play of lot of tricks on the eye of what's level and what's not.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Was able to get out an do some more shooting today. Freaking 20* outside and snowing but the winds were calm so I had to go!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Sweet looking stick, looks to be built perfect for your needs. Looks like a shooter too!

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Just got my bolt back from Paul (boltfluter) at Pro-Precision Rifles. I went with the Vortex fluting and couldn't be happier! The transaction went super smooth and Paul even called me to verify some things to make sure the bolt was finished exactly as I wanted. Definitely recommend Pro-Precision Rifles.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Beautiful rifle!

I am going to be sending out my bolt to get it fluted soon (hopefully).

Thanks for sharing and Shoot Straight,

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Great build friend. Question, who painted the stock and what type material was used?

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

Thanks guys!

I actually painted the stock myself. I purchased the following stencils to get the GAP pattern:

http://www.stevensonenterprise.com/bulld...97n12n5ao4gtkb7

The paints that I used were the various colors in the Rustoleum Camouflage line.

Everything worked great. I just let each layer of paint fully dry before applying the next stencils and layer.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

very nice!

Your post has affirmed my recent decision to go .260 as well over the CM. I am just waiting on my rings to get my scope mounted up. I am damn excited to get going on this new caliber. I have been shooting .308 and .223 for the last few years...I felt it was time to kick it up a notch.

Re: .260 Remington Build by Southwest Precision

great thread and welcome - nice, clean and seemingly effective build. Congrats

I just put in applications for hunting Colorado mule deer, elk, pronghorn, moose, mountain goat and rocky mountain sheep. I don't stand a chance getting the limited licenses for anything but mule deer this year but I'll be purchasing an unlimited license for elk if nothing else.

I plan on using my .260 for everything except the moose (which should take 10 years or so to draw a license). I will most likely by using HSM .260 rounds with Berger 140gr VLD bullets.

Most people around here haven't heard of a .260 and doubt it for shooting most of those species but then I tell them how it really compares to a .30-06 (sorry for the formatting not quite working right)

Remington .30-06 150gr Core-Lokt is the usual ammo carried in the stores around here for hunting (B.C of 0.314 and MV of 2910):
Range Energy
100 2282
200 1828
300 1448
400 1133
500 878

Remington .30-06 180gr Accu-Tip is some of the best normal (not crazy expensive) hunting ammo that I see (B.C of 0.480 and MV of 2725):
Range Energy
100 2577
200 2227
300 1916
400 1639
500 1396

HSM .260 140gr Berger VLD Hunting rounds are what I plan on using and should look like the following from my rifle (B.C. of 0.612 and MV of 2725):
Range Energy
100 2067
200 1846
300 1644
400 1459
500 1291

So, as you can see, the .260 passes up the normal .30-06 round in energy by 200 yards. It's also only about 100 ft-lbs of energy short at 500 yards compared to the 180gr round (max distance I plan on hunting).

Also, the situation is the following for sectional density:
150gr Core-Lokt = 0.226
180gr Accu-Tip = 0.271
140gr Berger VLD Hunting = 0.313

So, in summary, I think the .260 140gr Berger VLD Hunting round makes a good case for itself for the big game animals I plan on hunting.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

These are the factory loads I plan on shooting for target and hunting.

They are the following, left to right in the picture:

1) Cor-Bon Performance Match 139gr Lapua Scenar (BC listed as 0.615)
2) HSM 140gr VLD Hunting (BC listed as 0.612)
3) HSM 130gr VLD Hunting (BC listed as 0.552)

Very cool! Enjoy the shooting and the hunts...and were it not for our very questionable state Government, I would love it here too.

Cheers,

Very nice, starting to get things ready for a 260 built myself. I have the barrel, just dont know if I want to use the 700,or go custom

Great choice! The 260 rem is a great all around caliber. I have a nighthawk custom that makes me look like a pro.it will print groups at around 2"-2 1/2" at my local 600 yd range.that may not be big news for some, but for me
its pretty damn good.have fun,and don't forget to buy lapua brass!!!..............dave

Dave, I have the Lapua brass covered. That's what all the Cor-Bon factory rounds are loaded in. So when I've shot all that I'll start reloading. I would be very happy with 2.5" groups at 600 yards!

Those groups will come with time.you might want to try those nosler 140 comps.they are great! And thanks for the stencil tip.got a paint shop,so i'll give em a try.............dave

I was able to do a little laser ranging with my new Swarovski and came up with the following:

Left to right the ranges are:
1295 yards
1172 yards
1364 yards
1505 yards
1610 yards
1784 yards

The problem is that the area is not really that accessible so it would be hard to put up targets. This will most likely be my rock busting range with the big 50 but I'll also try it with the 260.

I was out shooting today and chrono'd the HSM loads with 140gr Berger VLD Hunting bullets. They average exactly 2800 fps out of my 22" barrel so I'm happy with that!

That means at my altitude (19.55 inHg absolute pressure), the bullet will be supersonic to 2300 yards.

I love the post with the detail on the custom build, the chosses made and the explaination of those choices. The pictures speak for themselves- makes me want to get into the backcountry more.

So I was able to get out nice and early this morning to do a little target shooting and extended chrono work. My main goal was to make sure the HSM Berger 140gr VLD Hunting rounds were dialed in perfectly out to 600 yards. I'm planning at shooting at elk out to that distance this fall here in Colorado. Conditions today were 19.55 baro pressure and 50 degrees F.

I got some surprising data from the chrono today. Here's the shot data for the HSM Berger 140gr VLD Hunting factory loaded rounds from my rifle (22" Krieger cut rifled barrel):

1) 2818
2) 2807
3) 2780
4) 2830
5) 2822
6) 2900
7) 2918
8) 2843
9) 2840
10) 2836

Average: 2842 fps
Std Dev: 40.12
Extreme Spread: 138 fps

While I'm very happy with the average velocity, the extreme spread is pretty big. I also can't believe there were two rounds at 2900 and 2918. The rest of the rounds were pretty close together except for the 2780 round.

Then it got even crazier when I tested the HSM Berger 130gr VLD Hunting and got the following:

Average: 2672 fps
Std Dev: 21.88
Extreme Spread: 58 fps

Some other notes from the shooting:
- I fired rounds from two separate boxes of each type of round to make sure it wasn't just one box that was having an issue
- The rounds were kept in the boxes in the shade prior to being loaded in the magazine
- I shot 3 to 5 rounds and then checked the target so the barrel was plenty cool between shots

I was expecting the 130gr to be faster than the 140gr, not average 170 fps slower! So I contacted The Hunting Shack (HSM) about my data and wanted to see what they said. Initially they told me that they expected the 130gr to average 2800 fps in a 22" barrel with the 140gr to be 75 fps slower (2725). I gave them the lot info from the boxes that I fired and they're going to see what they can find out.

Any thoughts on this or other similar experiences?

I was able to setup at 600 yards and dial in 3.3 mils (70.5") of vertical elevation (from my ballistics program) from my 100 yard zero and get the following 3 shot group laying prone on the ground with just a bipod:

I have never had good luck with HSM ammo, and don't recommend them to anyone. The 308 loads I tried had some crazy MV spreads, pressure issues (sticky bolt lift, cratered primers, ejector swipes), and were not accurate enough for match ammo (not even close to black hills, lapua, and GMM). I would think that hand loads would help greatly with accuracy, or just stick with the cor bon ammo. Just my experience, and opinion.

You did a great job on your build sir! You definitely did your homework and it looks like you have a shooter there. You also did a great job on posting all the details before and after. I think you will be very happy with your choice in caliber, I know from experience that the .260 works well on elk sized game. Thanks again for the write-up and pictures.
Happy shooting!
