Hello fellow marksmen! I'm new to the forum, so please excuse any nooby ignorance.

I'm planning to build a Remington 700 SPS .308 Win 24" with an 1.5 AICS stock in OD or Black. I've been trying to do some research, but getting somewhat confused on the different versions.

1) 1.5 vs 2.0 pertains to folding and non folding

2) Short Action vs. Long Action pertains to a corresponding cartridge. Since I'm building a .308 Win, I should get the Short Action?

3) Some online retailers display different images for the same item:

In Black they show this:

In Od, they show this:

Even though both of these stocks are listed under the same product description, there is an obvious difference in the images. At first, I thought the Od was a 2.0 version because of the apparent split at the bottom part of the stock but doesn't have the folding joint. The OD also has a completely different but stock.

What I really want is this:

Is this most likely just a website photo error? How do I distinguish between the variants and how can I request for the specific one I want?

Thanks in advance!

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

1.5 is fixed, 2.0 is folding. For your .308 you'll want the short action.

Last year AI "updated" the plastic skins on the chassis which is why you see a difference. The first image is the older style, while the second image is the newer style. Depending on vendor's inventory, you may get one or the other. If you want the newer style, request it but chances are you'll probably get the newer style in the short action models as that's what we have been receiving for 6 months or so.

As a note, we have yet to get any long action chassis with the new skins but they're supposedly coming.

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

The 1.5 is fixed and the 2.0 is a folder. You are correct.

The different "skins" you see in the photos are due to AI re-designing the skins last year. The middle photo you provided is of a 1.5 AICS with the new skins. If it was a 2.0 (folder), the joint just above the thumb-hole would be black metal. I *think* AI redesigned the skins so that the folders and the fixed stocks used the same skins. Probably saves them some manufacturing costs. The new skins look cooler too.

.308 is a short action caliber.

When you place your order, you apparently want an AICS 1.5 in black for a Remington 700 short action. It will come with a magazine. Just make sure that it is a .308 mag and not a .223.

Prices are about the same everywhere, so I would buy from a Hide vendor who is knowledgeable of what you want. I'd suggest Mile High Shooting or EuroOptics. I'm sure there are other Hide vendors that stock AICS, but those to pop to my mind.

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

There are also models available with pistol grip skins from Victor Company, along with many other enhancements. Have a look at his site, its worth it.

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

Having owned the Gen1 AICS1.5 in SA, the GEN2 Skins are better in ways, but the added grooves are not very friendly, and fairly "sharp". I am contemplating either using a dremel to round out the corners/lines where the skins meet, Channel would be a better description, or adding some latex or bondo type material to the areas that aggravate my hand(s).

Another thought is to try the Viper skins, but i didn't want a pistol grip for this one.

Thanks for the info. What part of the chassis are you referring to where the extra grooves were added? Any other reasons that make it better or worst?

The real reason I wan the older version is purely on looks. I think the butt stock looks better. But I've been told the new gen is better and slimmer. Can anyone else co-sign on that?

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

May I just suggest that you consider the 2.0. I sprung for it and am very glad I did. Switched from an HS Precision stock, and with the AICS it was just a hair too tall for my safe unfolded. On top of the space saving ability in the safe it is much easier to clean and transport. Well worth it IMO.

PS: The folding mechanism is ROCK solid. No play, and I don't see it ever being a problem. If it were to ever develop (although I have never heard of it happening) I think AI would take care of it ASAP

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

Also, I had heard that some people had to modify the chassis to accept Timney triggers. I got the newer style 2.0 chassis and I did not have to do this. Just FYI.

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

I got an AICS 2.0 from mile high shooting they are GTG and I love the chassis. I would definitely look at the 2.0 like clj said its a couple hundred extra but its nice to have and there is no real disadvantage other then a little extra money up front and if you get a 1.5 there is no way to convert it into a folder if you decide you want it later.

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

Hey, I am new to this site and was in similar situation, Ended up building a Rem 700 .308 5r 20 in stainless threaded. Bought AI Chasis 2.0 which is the folder. I cannot tell you how awesome this build has turned out. I recommend the 2.0 because it makes cleaning a breeze, and the compact ability a nice option. The A.I. is a true piece of workmanship, it is totally adjustable and built like a brick sh#t house. I added the jewel trigger, Harris swivel bi- pod and lupe Mk 4. Needless to say I am truly amazed so far!,,
Call Mile High! Good Luck!

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

Just a heads-up: There are a couple of hiccups in the feature set of the new-style AICS chassis: 1. AI has deleted the "butt spike" or monopod mounting hole/connector that existed in the old style. So, if you're interested in a monopod for this new chassis, there are no mounting solutions. Accu Shot and CTK Precision have designed monopods to fit the AICS chassis, which are now incompatible with this version. 2. There are other third-party products (e.g., Borka Tools) designed to support AI's AICS that now have qualifying statements that warn that some aspects of their product do not fit the new chassis.

Manufacturers that remove features and/or functionality in new versions of products, without changing the model name or number, are not doing consumers, or companies that have built products in support of their products, any favors--to say the least!

Re: AICS 1.5 versions

Went to Mile High for the goods. Great people and support. Cheers.

to the OP or whomever asked, its the seams. I don't remember the GEN1 AICS stock having as many seams or being as sharp at the seams

The Original / Gen1 seemed smoother although it irritated the back of my hand.

In the End, its a give and take, but the Gen2 is lighter and less blocky. Just needs to be dremel'd along the seams/grooves whatever you wish to call them.

Hope that helps a bit more. but u get the drift when you compare pics of the Gen1 Original to new Gen2 updated model.

My opinion too, but I like the look of the Gen1 also!

I believe CTK has a new monopod which is now fully compatible with the 1.5 gen2, it looks pretty good to.

I totally agree though a name change or something to differentiate the models would of been great, even 1.5 gen2 or 1.5.2!!

Side Note,

I just got my AICS 1.5 Long Action from Euro Optic, and it came with the NEW skins.

I think they have pros & cons versus the originals, but overall I am happy with them.
