I have a co-worker that just went to Afgan. He's with the PA Guard, as a helicopter mechanic. Last I heard from him, he was on base only - not flying.

Our company is planning on sending him a care package. I thought I'd ask here to see what guys who have been there can tell us about what they like to get over there. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: Care package ?

well i can tell you that if he is on a COB or a small FOB, anything you send will be great, if he is at KAF, BAF there PX's have just about anything you want..
When i was there I was at Shindand and we didnt have anything there when it first started out.. so anything like wet wipes or something to read is what i would have my wife send me..

Hope this helps!!

Re: Care package ?

Boxes I send out every month, contain coffee, cigars and a liter of vodka, rum or bourbon.

Re: Care package ?

Junk food. Chances are he's got everything he could need there, but it's always nice getting free junk food. Though I really like RJW's idea! Honestly, ask him. It's like christmas...you can guess what to get and it's hit or miss, or just ask and get him what he wants.

Wet wipes, Candy (starburst, life savers or something sweet to help get rid of the dryness and sand taste), Double Stuffed Oreos are golden where I'm at. Maybe some toiletries like razors, soap, shampoo, shaving cream, deoderant etc.

Through a couple of smutty DVDs in there, and those men will think you're a God.

Re: Care package ?

i sent 16 small apple pies a 6lb block of cheese and 5lbs of jerky last time and beer. I would have given anything to see the guys faces when my friends team started putting them pies in the microwave at the mess hall

Re: Care package ?

When my buddy was over in Afghanistan I got one of those popcorn makers for a fair or movie theater, and a big box of popcorn. He said the guys were all hoping for joy when the box showed up saying Happy Fun Time.

He said they were really happy, was a good shot for the home stretch.

Buddy from High School, I sent him some nice black riding gloves for his work as a machine gunner, was doing over watch, some thick socks and another pair of light riding gloves that were black.

After hearing the stories about Third World Nationals making all the food though, next time I am sending massive amounts of food, afore mentioned buddy got wicked food poisoning for weeks. So all in all, next time they go, I am buying food, lots of it.

Re: Care package ?

A friends son was in A-stan a couple of years back. He said that any kind of battery especially AA and AAA were like gold. You could trade them with other people on base for almost anything.

Other than a selection of batteries, I always sent some kind of hard candy, (Jolly Rancher) wet wipes in the bigger containers like for baby diaper bags, magazines when I could find some new ones. Magazines of all kinds, not just porn or gun related. He said they were traded to a lesser extent than the batteries. There winter is the same time as ours. He wanted some warmer socks, so I got a few pairs of the thinner weight (feels like silk) poly-pro (Patagonia ?)and sent to him. He really liked that.

I don't remember what the deal was. But I remember that if you went to the local post office that they would give you a Priority Mail box and some kind of discount on the postage because it was going to an Army base. I do remember that that was the only way I shipped to him.
