Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

So here is my dilema, I just bought a .338 Lapua Mag, Remington 700, with a Bell & Carlson "Medalist" tactical stock, and a Millet 6 - 25 X 56 LRS scope. I have yet to pull the trigger on this rifle but I am hoping to do so this week.

I am limited on cash (after paying fot this beast) so I can't try a lot of different loads to see what the rifle likes, so I am hoping for some imput from the experts (you guys).

Does anyone here have any experience with the Lapua? If so, what was your findings on prefered bullet weights for long range and hunting. Ideally I want to fing a bullet that will travel consistently out to a mile, and still be a good hunting bullet for deer and elk at around 1000 yards. (I want to be able to use it on coyotes @ max ranges, but I wouldn't use it on deer at that distance.)

I would love some feed back that might help speed things along and save me some much needed cash.

Thanks everybody.

House.

Yes, I am hand loading. Not sure of the rate of twist. I will check that tonight when I get home.

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

Thanks guys for all the help. The rate of twist is 1:11.5 (so I am not sure if that makes is a 1/11 or a 1/12).

Is there any place in the Portland Metro that sells the 250 or 300 grain SMX?

And again, thanks.

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

The 300 grain SMK is the cats ass for the 338 LM. It has a huge BC and will shoot flatter and have less wind drift than the 250's. I don't know about the 1:11.5 twist though. Most use a 1:10 or faster.

Please expand on this comment above. "A lot further" than what?

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

My 1:12 TRG handles the 300smk just fine in the summertime in Michigan. Dont know about winter yet.

Than the 1000 yards I said they would be good for in the beginning of my post.

That makes your rifles twist 1:11.5". It might work fine it might not. You'll have to try to see what works for you.

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

With that twist you might want to try the 250 smk for further distance because a twist of at 1:10 or lower (preferably 1:9.5 or 1:9.3 ) is required to stabilize the big 300 grain pill when it goes subsonic around 1700 yrds.

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

Anybody can share experience how these bullets transition through transonic?

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

@Sendero_man, so your advice for a bullet that satisfies "good transonic transition" requirement is Berger 300gr Hybrid?

Tnx!

BTW, is Hybrid OTM the same as Hybrid? I'm a bit lost here...

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

You guys think a sierra match king would be a good bullet for hunting elk to 1000 yards? sounds fishy..haha

no problem - just walk 500 yds and take the shot from there, the dead elk will not come to you, so get a start to get to it

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

I worked up a load with the 250gr Accubonds this last weekend. Printed a 1.5" 3 shot group at 530 yards.

Primer: CCI250
Brass: Nosler
Powder: 94gr Retumbo
OAL: 3.680" (2.977" base to ogive)
Sadly, no chrono data... Horizontal dispersion was less than an inch though...

Rifle: Savage 110BA

Nice results!

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

I've always used the smk 250 hpbt with great sucess. Now that I cant find them I'm using the 250 Lupua scenar. My range where I shoot only goes to 200 yds and I see no difference using the Lapua and they can still be found on different web sites

Re: Best bullet for 338 Lapua Mag???

I just started loading the new 300 gr Nosler Accubonds for elk hunting. Very high BC and awesome terminal ballistics. The 300 SMKs are great but I wanted to try something different. Heading to the range tomorrow if the rain calms down.
