How far off the lands have you found to work well? Please name the bullet and distance to the lands.

Just trying to get an idea of COAL for stock rmmys.

155 Scenar 0.015 from the lands (which I found at 2.963, so I load them at 2.948)

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

Load mag length, the lands are way out there, you may gain something, not much, and you'll be single loading.

can we include ogive length too? Please.

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

My experience with Factory Remington barrels so far is that that lands might as well be in fucking Egypt. They are so far out there that you will be hard pressed to load a bullet on the lands in one.

I have had 4 different Rem 700's in my shop in the last 2 weeks and I measured them all to be in another time zone as far as I was concerned. This is using Hornady's OAL gauge set up with Scenars, AMAX's, Match Kings and Nosler Custom Comps in at least 2 different weights of each projectile. I was horrified.

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

I'm thinking alot of manufacturers do this for liability reasons. You can't really jam the lands for instance when a bullet touches at say 2.95 in a short action in an internal or detachable mag fed rifle unless you single feed. In which case, so little bullet would remain in contact with the case neck as to make this impractical. Unfortunately we live in a very litigious world. Individual stupidity doesn't disqualify one from filing a law suit. Manufacturers all but disqualify themselves from any mishaps in their firearms that result from using non factory loaded ammunition. Can't say that I blame them!

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

+1 on everything above. I measure my sps and shit a brick. It's a little scary to actually see how far of a jump when loaded to magazine length. The rifle shoots where holes are touching so that's good enough. I load 168gr amax's 2.840 coal. Don't have an ogive because my comparator is a pos and for some reason it doesn't square up well giving me crap readings.

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

I load mag length and my rifle shoots just fine. Unless your doing this to squeeze every once of accuracy at the cost of a single shot rifle don't worry about the trying to touch the lands. Also if you are trying to get that accuracy just get it rebarreled with a better quality barrel with a shorter throat.

700 XCR Compact Tactical (Factory Chamber)

Touch Land
COAL ; 175 SMK @ 2.860"
BOG ; 175 SMK @ 2.290"

My Load
COAL ; 175 SMK @ 2.840"
BOG ; 175 SMK @ 2.270"

Rem 700 5R 24". I go 0.020" off the lands with 168, 178, 175 AMAX, BTHPs (Hornady or SMK ... doesn't matter as the load is interchangeable between these two bullets). 0.010" works too, but because of the long COL the rifle has with the factory chamber, 0.020" is more reliable for feeding.

X2, oh and how's the weather out there in COS? I just moved to NW, FL a couple weeks back. I'm gonna miss the range out there the closest range over 300 here is 4.5 hrs away.

Back to the thread mine aren't anywhere near the lands when loaded to mag length, but they still shoot bug holes.

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

On my Remington factory barrel, I was jumping a Nosler over .250" and they were loaded out as far as I could safely seat them. Thing shot bug-holes with the 190's but not quite so good with the 155's or 175's.

I had the barrel set back and it improved the 175's some but screwed my 190's and didn't improve 155 performance any.

It has a new barrel on it now.

I have found that Sierra Match kinds are very tolerant of jump, but you can also jam. Word of caution, generally I don't touch the lands just in case I need to extract the cartridge before shooting it. Bergers are generally less tolerant of jump. When I was running a 5r milspec I was loading to 2.810 with smk 175 gr with 43.6 gr of varget. I forget distance to lands. My loads generally end up between 0.005-0.020 off the lands. You really should test in YOUR rifle, and check for pressure signs. If you are going to test jammed start jammed with 10% lower charges or manual min charge and work up. Keep in mind that pressures increase with jamming AND with OAL that is to short ( reduces case volume, whereby increasing pressure with the same powder charges). Keep in mind that measuring from the Ogive is really the best way to measure installed oal. Especially with SMK since the tips vary several thousandths for each bullet even in the same lot.

1+,

2.825 average works very well in my 20" tactical and 26" varmint with A-max and SMK's. The two hold outs that don’t(berger 168 VLD and 155 scenar), I just kept seating deeper and found 2.810-2.815" to work better.

Re: How many handload for Rem 700 in .308

Glad to see others found the lands to be way out there on the aac-sd. 178gr amax touches at 2.935" on mine. My mag length is 2.86" so I think getting anywhere near the lands would be impossible without making it a single shot. Since I have a Wyatts detachable magazine I am gonna resort to that.
