Are there any quality muzzle breaks out there in .308 that are made to be simply screwed onto a threaded varmint barrel? (It's the stock Rem 700 AAC-SD barrel) I want to try out having a break before I commit to getting any machining done.
If your barrel´s already threaded, just find a brake with a corresponding thread/caliber opening. Done. For unthreaded barrels, Pete Roedale has a clamping solution.
The issue with the AAC is that there is an area below the threads that would ordinarily be relieved (If done by a gunsmith). Remington chose to cheap out and not relieve that area. The AAC 51T from Surefire will work. An alternative would be to contact Ross Schuler and have him make one for you. Ross charges 1/4 what Surefire does fro his brake. One suggestion though is to ask him to leave the top of the brake un-Ported.
You should definitely consider Ross Schuler. He does great work, I believe it was 45 dollars shipped to my door. It looks great and for that price it's hard to beat.
If you can't do any machine work, your limited to radial styles for all practical purposes....unless your going with shooting it indexed short of the shoulder/thread relief. Don't know if that is cool to do or not.
