Primer Question

I am getting ready to work up some load testing for my 6.5 creedmoor rifle and was wondering if it is really necessary to use match grade primers? I have normal large rifle primers but cannot find any of the CCI BR2s or Federal 210Ms in stock due to current events. Should I wait for the match grade primers before I conduct my testing? Thanks

From other threads I've read the last few days, the overall concensus seems to be that it really does not matter much one way or the other. Those that have actually tested using a repeatable methodology have said there was either no difference or only a very, very slight increase in velocity.

From my experience, I have never found a primer switch to change load development results too much. I have seen where trying a different primer may make the group a bit tighter or take out a bit of vertical dispersion due to a lower velocity spread, however.

Any practice you can get NOW, will more than offset any (im)perceptible change in POI and SD due to standard vs. match primers, IMO.

My experience has shown the differences in primers really show up at or near the MAX pressure points. If you are running very hot loads you will see the primers act differently. Some hold up better than others. I always choose the ones that lets me run where I want pressure wise. Any of tem should light off a full charge in a creedmore case. Consistancy is key. In my experience if a regular primer will hold up, little is had by using premium grade. As always, YMMV
