Definitely get the camo wrap, not the tape. The wrap works great. I had the barrel and scope of my Rem 700 wrapped for over a year. Only reason I took it off is because I got caught in a rain and wanted to make sure and clean the barrel plus I'm going to be painting it once it gets back from the gunsmith.
The real Mcnett Camoform cloth tape (medical wrap that's painted) works great. It does NOT leave any residue behind, even if it gets wet/rained on. I have a scope that's been wrapped in it for almost 2 years now and it's help up great. I have an AR that I sometimes use to coyote hunt with and it's been wrapped for over a year and had the shit used out of it and its still holding up very well.
I can't speak for the other brands, I've never used anything but Mcnett. It's only eBay for cheap.
I've used McNett for a few years on a variety of gear. Excellent wrap, no residue, not as good as a paint job but really helps against scrapes and burning yourself on the hot parts.
I found some camo tape at a tractor supply store, which was intended to wrap legs of a horse. It appeared to be the stuff that McNett was made out of (I already had some for comparison) except the horse wrap was wider and much cheaper. I think I got 4 rolls for seven dollars. It came with different patterns only two of which were camo and admittedly not as cool looking as the McNett, but every bit as functionable.
I've used the McNett quite a bit on my 700 SPS with no issues of POI shift or accuracy. Make sure it doesn't interfere with the free float.
Don't think I would want to put it on a rifle that would generate lots of heat like an AR. My 700 will get toasty when I shoot a 20rnd string but nothing like the AR.
