friggin shweet. When is the range report? How do yoou like the stock? I was thinking about the t5

I really like the stock. I have the same stock on my practical rifle and since I am used to it, I went with the same on this one. The stock only weighs around 4.5 lbs so it is helpful with the weight limit. Allowed me to go longer on barrel and use a beefy action.

Just started load development yesterday. Using Berger 200 Hybrids to start. Load is looking promising but not ready yet.

I bet it will shoot real well with that twist rate and bullet weight. Did you bed it or go mini chassis? Ill be looking for the range report soon.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL rifle....love the stock especially....

I know nothing about FTR.... Please explain to me the reason for the barrel length....

All other things being equal, a longer barrel = higher velocity. Higher velocity = less wind drift.

I'm clear on that concept, but I was under the impression that a .308 can achieve that at maximum at 10" less than what this rifle is running. To each his own, and a BEAUTIFUL rifle none-the-less. Just thought it might have something to do with comp. reg's....

I'd own it in a heart-beat.....

Yeah, very nice gun. From what I can tell, most F-T/R shooters shoot 185g bullets to around 2750fps (compare M118LR, which is a 175g bullet going ~2650fps out of a 24" barrel), so a long throat and long barrel really helps.

FT/R is belly benchrest @ 600, 800, 900 or 1000 yards (depends on the range that is hosting the event) with 223s and 308s only. Shot off a bipod with rear support.

While you're correct that 308 is pretty forgiving, in that it achieves very respectable velocity from short(ish) barrels, they ABSOLUTELY gain more velocity from longer ones. The test results I've seen indicate it would take a ~45" barrel to stop seeing gains altogether. Obviously though, the gain in speed per inch of barrel drops off (diminishing returns) quite a bit past 26" or so. Still, the FT/R shooters are fiercely competitive, and the winner is often chosen by X count, so these guys are looking for any advantage they can get. Even 20fps is an advantage.

Real nice rifle. you should be pleased. quick question are those steel rings and do you have a back up scope that is less then 36x. FIXED 36X have given some folks fits at new ranges where the magnification can sometimes make it hard to spot your shots or when you forget to turn back your windage to zero from your last match/relay

have fun

Sexy as hell!

Out of curiosity, about how much $$ do you have in this and how long did it take for you to put it together? Also, which merchants did you use for parts (esp. action)?

Oh, and why the MB specifically over the other BAT options for .308?

Until now, I did not know anything about the Duplin bipod but when I looked for info, this what I found in a South African Forum.

I have found the latest and hottest bi-pod - the Duplin weighing in at 485gr it is a FTR shot's dream!! It weights little, it is very strong and flex basically nothing!! This is the bi-pod to take the 2013 FCWC by storm!! Clint Copper at : clint at duplinrifles dot com and at US $ 280 + postage it is a real bargain!!

A "FTR shot's dream", I guess this guy is in full agreement with your choice.
This is one of the reasons I like the Hide; always something to learn.
Good shooting.

TX,
You can't achieve max at 22 inchs. You are pushing alot of unburned powder out of the end of the barrel. Which is fine it just depends on what you want to do with the rifle. I say if you want to shoot out to 800 yards it will work awesome. But if you want to fired 20 shots at a 5 inch X ring at 1k, your not even going to be in the ball park.

The record for FTR at 1k is a 200 with 5X's. So that means all 20 shots inside of 10 inchs with 5 shots being inside of 5inchs.

That's why you see the extra barrel length. I've seen a ton of figures on how much you gain per inch of barrel. But a conservative figure is probably about 15 to 20 fps. Alot of the FTR guys I shoot with are running berger 200 hybrids at2650 to 2700 fps.

Hope that makes sense.

I guess I could figure out what I have in it but I dont know exactly. I did some trading, sold one rifle, won an action then sold it, sold a scope, bought this one for the same price etc... I chose the MB because it is so strong and beefy. I accept the fact that this is for a benchrest type of use and I will either stay with "belly bench F T/R or maybe open later on. I really like the stock since I am used to it as it is the same stock on my tactical rifle.

Started ordering parts last June.

I used the following vendors:

Bruno's for the action
Bugholes for the barrel
PT&G for the barrel work
Manners for the stock
Snipershide group buy on the trigger
IOR Valdada for the scope
Clint at Duplin Rifles for Bipod

Rings are aluminum I went with IOR fixed 36 because I thought it was the best glass/magnification combo I could find for the price. I like that it is light since I am pushing the weight with the long barrel and big action. The manners stock really helps save weight compared to other stocks. I use a separate spotting scope to read mirage and spot the target. Remembering to reset the knobs is part of the game. I learned those lessons the hard way a while ago and knock on wood, I don't seem to have a problem with that any more. "Pre-flight checklist"
