I'm stuck between the two. What do you guys think? Definitely want FFP and zero stop. Next question; is a 15 power scope really enough to shoot 800-1000 yards. Was going to buy the new Atacr but its SPF.

15 power is plenty although more is good too as you can always go down. I think it would depending on the rifle and if it was just target 100-1000 yards Id go Razor if you might hunt with it or shoot inside 100 like an AR platform I would want the lower 3.5 power of the F1.

It's a Remington 700. My normal shooting range is 400 yards. But want to shoot out past 800.

To scissorhands, the beast is not in the budget. 2-2300 is my range. But really 2k. I can stretch it for the F1

Will be doing target mostly but some hunting is possible.

I would get the Razor and you'll have enough left for rings. The razor is an outstanding optic. I own both

Having owned a few of both I would say get the Razor. The F1 is a very good optic but the Razor has better power range and I like the way the zero stop is set up as well.

I have two NF F1 scopes. One on a 308 and the other a 300WM. Have looked through the Vortex HD, but thought the NF a better optic at extended ranges. Plus, both of the F1's I ordered came with a set of medium height NF rings. If memory serves me correctly, the F1 is the only scope that NF includes a set of rings. Could be wrong but I think that's correct. Just my $.02.

F1 would be my pick, out of the two, having used both.

F1 is also definetly my pic. I love mine. I believe the clarity/quality of glass far surpasses the vortex.

I have both and I can say they are pretty close. The Razor is a little cheaper so you could get rings for the price of a F1. I do like the F1 as I love the NPR-1 on it and the scope is sleeker than a Razor. The Razor has a large elevation and windage knobs so it is more of your preference. When it comes to shooting distance either would suit you well.

Thanks guys, I was hoping for more of a one sided vote. lol What about resale value? I like the nightforce but think that 15 power isn't enough. I like the vortex for the 20 power but it's not a (nightforce). If I buy the vortex will I be disappointed? Decisions, decisions...

Having owned both and choosing which one I like better is a tough decision. I suggest you pick the features on the scope you'd prefer rather than brand.

The only things I don't like about the F1 is it's actually closer to 14X rather than 15X on max mag and the antiquated adjustment style of the illume system. That being said even 14x at 800Y will get the job done. Positives for me are; the HS knobs are well done with distinct clicks that line up perfectly, glass on mine is above average and it's almost compact in size.

I never did like the tall knobs of the Razor and the ones I've looked through had average glass. I had a opportunity to test the 10 mil knob version recently, uh... Vortex definitively could have done a better job on these! I like that it has 20x on the top end, 36 mils total elevation and a modern illume system. My favorite thing about the Razor is the ability to set the zero perfectly on the vertical plain, instead of .05 mil high or low which seems to be the case half the time for me on other scopes.

Just watched some videos on the zero stops on both scopes. vortex vs nightforce. I like the fact that the turret actually disengages from the clicks and you can adjust between clicks. I have needed a half a click so many times in the past to get a perfect target zero. I think this may be the scope for me. I think I need that 20 power. I do like that the whole eyepiece adjust on the nightforce instead of just the ring. Alot easier to adjust if your wearing gloves in cold weather. I think these two scopes should mate and I'll buy the kid. lol

Razor has great resale value too. Vortex's CS and warranty are outstanding. For less money, you get the all the features the F1 has in the Razor along with higher top end magnification. Unless you need the lower end FOV I don't see why choosing the F1 makes sense.

Best advice in this whole thread. I own both. They are both great. Anybody who says "x" is hands down better than "y" is full of it and probably just brand biased. The glass in both is outstanding. Look at the features and get which ever one has more of what you want, as they differ in features much more than they do in quality.

I've made up my mind. I really, really like the nighforce F1 but my choice is going to be the vortex razor hd. I like that is has the 20 power, I really like the zero stop. I also like that you can use the butler creek caps on it too, can't do that with the nightforce it seems, I don't like the bikini covers.

The razor's zero stop is awesome. Don't know if you knew this, but the Razor actually comes with flip caps. They aren't butler creek, but they're free so thats nice. Also, if you are buying new you can use coupons and get it for $1900 free shipping.

Yeah I'm buying new, I think I will give sportoptics a call on monday and see what kind of deal I can get. I've read good things about them here on the hide. Thanks to everyone for your advice

Any recommendations on rings? I got a remington 700 with nightforce 20 moa base. What height would I need? Vortex offers .96 and 1" high for the hd.

Get the Vortex rings. They are made by Seekins. Either height will work with the Razor's 50mm objective.

Check out American Rifle Company M10 rings. I got mine from SWFA and they are super high quality and by far the easiest rings to mount up. I have some on a Vortex PST and it is rock solid

Was talking to a buddy about my scope choice and he brought up a subject that I hadn't thought of. He was telling me that some of the FFP scopes, the reticle is hard to see at low power. Is this a problem with the razor hd at 5 power? I was only thinking of the range finding capabilities.

At what range we talking about here? You can see mil holds at 3x-5x? You guys must have hawk eyes... because my 20/15 has a hard time with that.

I was really talking about was, is the reticle hard to see are lowest power setting. Is it real small. I won't be using range finding until probably past 200 yards. I didn't know if this was a concern with the ffp or not. Just was throw at me and I haven't ever had a ffp to know.

The HD's reticule gets pretty darn slim @ lowest power. To the point where I have trouble spotting the poa sometimes.
I also have occasional trouble with my NPR2 reticule on my NXS 5-22 as well.
so.............................
I think I need glasses:rolleyes:

The vortex does come up on here from time to time used. They can be found with the rings included for less than the scope new. I may know of such a scope available.....

i.e. keep an eye out on the for sale section here. I don't want to break the rules of the site in regards to anything for sale without going through the proper channels here.

I ordered a razor hd and I can't wait. Now a question for a shooting buddy. He's wanting to get the vortex viper pst. He's shooting a 308 also with 20moa base. I told him that he should be fine with pst out to 1000 yard with 40-42 moa of adjustment on scope. Correct? I think the pst has like 65 moa of elevation. But how much adjustment does it have after a 100 yard zero is the question.

40-42 is on the higher side but possible depending on the load used. If he uses a 20 MOA base he will theoretically have 52.5 MOA of elevation but you can't say exactly as if he uses alot of windage to zero then it will effect how much elevation he will have left.

With my load (178g BTHP @ 2730 FPS) I only need 31 MOA to get to 1000 with my 308 and my PST has quite a bit more left in it riding on a 20MOA base.

We've been shooting the federal gold medal. 175 grain. I believe it's around 2600fps. I'm sure we could reload a better load but I like it and it shoots a good group for me.
