Well, I have had my eye on these since they came out. They look cool as hell/functional as hell. I went to Gunsite for an ELR class in October, and the lead instructor for the class, Cory Trapp, had an Ashbury ASW there (basically the real deal, like a real AX vs an AX chassis with a 700 in it.) Having interest in the system, he was courteous enough to let me take it for a test drive, and I really really enjoyed it. I found it VERY comfortable.
This will be for my TRG-42. And I should clarify that it is pure luxury- the Sako stock, after trying different spacers/etc, fits me like a glove. So really my motivations are as follows:
1: I like the idea of adding a bit of weight. The TRG is a pretty light system to be shooting a lot of 300 grain projectiles in a range session.
2: I want/need the folder. The rifle is too long to comfortably carry in an Eberlestock Gunslinger, too long to comfortably get in and out of my safe, and too long to fit in an Eagle drag bag. The Sako folder is nice but the Sako rear folding half costs MORE than a whole Ashbury chassis.
3: Quick adjustments. I know a lot of people like to "set it and forget it," but I have QA features on my AX and I have found them to be quite handy. I shoot in Maine with some huge temperature swings over the course of the year and the layers change length of pull. Also, different field shooting positions at some times benefit from mild tweaks to LOP and cheek height.
4: Buttspike option. I did not try the Ashbury spike, but I have one on my AX and I LOVE IT. It allows me to only carry a small bag, so I use the spike for gross elevation adjustments and a small squeeze of the bag for minute adjustments. The Sako rear section also has a spike, but again, its almost $3k.
5: High speed/low drag factor. I think that it looks cool as hell.
So, I just need to be pushed over the edge a bit. For those with either an ASW or a chassis, please feel free to post up any and all thoughts. And pics are certainly encouraged!
I know P123 didn't like the treatment he got from Ashbury's sales rep before Cory took over, but now I feel that to be a non issue. I know the chassis is expensive as hell, and while I wish it were cheaper, my opinion is as follows: the Sako TRG-42 is an incredible value in .338's. I believe the action to be at least as good as any other on the market (with the exclusion perhaps of the AW/AX action as it is more rugged,) the trigger is the best available, and the barrels shoot just as well as any aftermarket barrel. Due to the really good price I got on the rifle through EuroOptic, and the fact that I sold my chassis, I have a top notch barreled action, and by the time I put it into the Saber-Forrst, I will have less cash in it than a DTA/AW/MRAD/ etc etc etc, and have a system that leaves nothing on the table.
