Anyone make a recommendation as to what would well for them. I think I like to have something that keeps the rocks and stickers at bay.

Thanks eller...I wondered about the blackhawk's, are they bulky or hard to get on?

hero - I like inexpensive, going to have to check that idea out...espiecially for my elbows.

I have some made by Hatch, they are definitely a must (especially the knee) if you ever take a carbine course.

I have Hatch in both black and OD. Both have been through many doors, and I can say that they have saved my knees and elbows on many occasions.

The blackhawks are pretty solid I wear then as a helicopter flight mechanic. Due to cabin height I spend a lot of time down on my knees while hoisting. The gromet/rivets that attach the plastic piece have a tendancy to rip through but usually only one happens.

When I use to shoot for the Guard, twice a year we'd go to Hawaii to shoot matches. The marines paved the firing lines (blacktop) on their ranges and they were pretty ruff on my bony elbows and knees.

The simple volley ball knee and elbow pads worked great. They don't need to be thick. I found the thin ones worked and gave less movement.

I don't want to sound dumb, but has any key ever used the knee pads you can insert into the 5.11 pants? I really don't want to have to strap knee pads on but like the idea of a thin layer of padding when I need it. Do they stay in place or are they more if a hassle than what they are worth?

I use the inserts in my Woolrich Elite pants and they are fine. I shoot practical stuff in the desert all the time and don't need more than that, but I don't expect them to be impact protection.
I just use volleyball elbow pads.

I've found the hard plastic "tactical" that are all the rave to be a liability on hard surfaces.

I keep a pair of Home Depot tile setter/construction knee pads in my ruck for when I'm not wearing my Elites. They Velcro under the knee and are free on top. I like that.

BTW-Woolrich pants pocket on front of thighs fit an AICS mag, 5.11's don't ;)
