So I just bought my second ever bolt gun.
Rem 700 Sendero SF 300wm
I'm not exactly new to bolts as I've shot a lot of them but most of what I've owned is levers or ARs and pistols.
I have my primary hunting rifles already and want this for long range fun.
It is in stock form.
List of what I'm thinking about doing .....
Glass of course.
Rings and base or 1 piece???? <<<< suggestions here
Bedding
Brake.....thinking bout the Fat Bastard
Trigger.......job or complete unit??????
Flutted bolt
Badger bolt knob
M5 dbm???? Mag or do without???
Possibly a stock swap way down the road.

Rings/bases will come first then the brake. I can't do it all at one time due to funds but I don't want to rush everything and go cheap. It will be a work in progress.

Let's hear your suggestions.

Thank you

Price point for the glass, rings and base?

Personally I like badger base and rings on a remmy. Glass depends on your budget.

Great call on going with the Sendero chassis. Out of the box accuracy is inherent, and you have a heck of great chassis to build from on that Sendero action and barrel. The .300WM is also a great choice. Especially now, as it seems .300WM is readily available at all my local stores.

As you likely know Vortex glass gets you a lot of scope and has an amazing warranty. Although I do see what looks like a Leupold style mount? Are you going to use a Weaver/1913 rail instead? If so, it may provide more options for rings, etc.

Two schools of thought on actions.

1. Bolt on items for the sake of appearances. Like wheels on a car. They look good and provide very marginal, if any, performance enhancements.

Or

2. Pull the motor, bore it over, new cams, blue print & balance it, add an exhaust, and hit the track. Or in this case have a competent, proven gunsmith/machinist true up the action to .0001+/-, install a heavier recoil-lug, face and lap the bolt, tactical handle (If that's your thing), trigger work, lap & match the scope rings, etc.

To begin with though, go shoot it as-is and see what improvements you want for your style of shooting. Don't let the ideas of others become your own, create it anew. Whatever you choose to do; have fun and post lots of pictures.

The Hide has tons of great information available, and most of the people are friendly and glad to help each other out.

The glass I am looking at is the mid range vortex viper

Shooter....
You are right about bolt ons. I have spent a small fortune for bolt ons for my Harley fxstbi and have yet to touch the motor.

I think I figured out the ring base delima on my own....
In the event I have or do work requiring the removal of the scope, a 1 piece unit requires removal from the rings and rings and base only requires me to remove the rings from base therefore leaving the rings intact.

I know the removable mag won't do much for performance but it looks kick a$$

I'm dumping the current twist mount base.

First off thats a gorgeous gun!

For the trigger I would say just get yourself a new whole package something like a timney jewel or huber concepts they are easy to install yourself and really arent that expensive these days.

As for installing bottom metal I personally would consider hard what stock I intend to stick it in in the future. If you have plans of replacing the stock with a chassis that will already come with everything you need for a DBM so why spend the money now then replace it down the road. You could get into a chassis system for around $1200 give or take which would give you a detachable box magazine and a lot of versatility. When you consider an m5 is $345 right off the bat then you have to get it inletted either into your current stock or into whatever you replace it with and then consider a replacement stock is going to run you 400+ (lower end of decent with the nice stocks running more in the $800 range) your already in the $800+ range before you talk about gunsmithing and shipping. I would definitely look at a chassis if a DBM is a feature your looking for.

Stop for a second. Long range rigs are very personal. What works for someone else may or may not work for you. Put some decent glass on the rifle and go shoot. Rounds are more important than mods right now. See what other guys are shooting and what will work for your style. If recoil is an issue, get a brake; if the stock doesn't fit modify or replace; if you shoot events where reloads are needed the got to a DBM. You get the point. As for glass and mounts. Badger 20 MOA 1 piece base and solid rings. Contrary to many posts here your rings don't have to cost as much as your scope to work. Vortex rings do a good job at a reasonable price. Get some experience to see what you need.

Very good advice right here. + something like this.

As for getting a chassis.......that will be w......a........y..... down the road. I would like one but no way I can afford one right now. This is for fun and not competition. YET.
As said above. Glass.. rings....base then a brake. After that comes the things I WANT not need.

I like the vortex viper PST 4-16 and 6-24 FFP EBR-1 Mrad, you may want the 6-24 for the zoom. You could also take a look at bushnells 6-24 tactical elite FFP G2DMR these are nice. These are the 3 I would recommend in the $800 - $1000 price range

After countless hours of research, IMO I'd say that the Vortex will be a better scope especially with their no questions asked warranty. I'd encourage you to go with the 6-24 so that you can truly use it for long-range magnification.

I'm thinking I should have spent the extra dollars and gone with a Vortex over the Nikon M-308, I recently purchased.

The Bushnell is a good scope, though I'm a little concerned that they no longer offer the G2DMR reticle. Besides, they don't seem to stand behind their products like Vortex. That's the kicker for me. My next scope will for sure be a Vortex.

Well first I'd send it to Bobby Hart of RWHart out of Nescopek PA. As a former World Champ, he specializes in doing a very affordable accurizing package that's very well suited to Senderos...only cost a little over $300. If you really want something to shoot good and want something different, he'll rechamber that 300WM of yours to a 30 Hart. The 30 Hart is right in the middle between a 300 Weatherby and a 300 RUM. The good news is it used to be a quite popular 1000 yard target catridge back in the day and he has all the loads that work already figured out. I bought a custom sporter off him in 30 Hart and with his loaded ammo my first group went .182 at 100 yards. I bought a heavy barreles tactical from him and wanted to shoot 200 grain Accubonds for hunting. He gave me a load with a couple grains of powder range and in one setting was shooting .5 at 200 yards with a 200 grainer at 3170 fps. I always thought it best w/ a factory rifle to get it shotting to its best before spending a ton on accessories and optics, then you know what you have...I've had a few Remington lemons over the years mixed in with some really great ones. When he looks it over he;ll tell you if there's a problem.

30Hart

Thanks for the tip but I want to keep it a 300wm. Its a FUN project for me that will evolve more over time. Not to mention I am currently not wanting to mess with pure custom wildcat type loads. I would like to get some ammo off the shelf in a bind.

I have built ARs and customized pistols. I just want to do something a LITTLE different rather than go full custom.
