H&K style sling hooks - why?

Ok, so I'm new to the sniper environment and I'm looking for a sling. Looking at AI, TAB Gear and Savvy Sniper, and I see that they all come standard (so to speak, I know TAB has options) with H&K hooks. I have used H&K hooks for AK's in the past and hate them because they're noisy, and they shift on the rifle. Is there some great feature of H&K hooks that I'm missing? I'm not asking this as a smartalec, I'm genuinely curious. Am I overlooking something?

I have them on my tab sling for my AICS 2.0 chassis but I am honestly not a big fan and would likely go a diffrent route if I ever do it again.

I may be wide of the mark, but as far as I know the H&K style hooks predate the more current flush cups by a long way. So maybe we need to cut them some slack on that score?

I agree that they are not as easy to hook up as the flush cups (they were a real PITA on the butt end of my AW if they got skewed).

But...in their defence....they are robust and (based on the AI and TAB Gear versions I've had) take some deliberate effort to detach.

Whilst I've personally not had any problems with flush cups and like the quarter turn lock that some have when slinging up, I have read others say that they are not too difficult to pull out of the cup if the detent is a little iffy.

I guess it depends (a) what your rifle can take and (b) what you are looking from in terms of attach/detach capability?

I've never understood it either. I have the H&K hooks on my SCAR, hate them. I wish they would have gone with QD sockets. I've never figured out the draw on H&k hooks either. The SCAR is a brand new design. They did not need to go with an antiquated system.

I have noticed the same problems with the hooks. I want to like them, but they are noisy and twist around making sling use harder. I just use simple swing swivels with a USGI sling and they work well. Something like this:

My feelings echo yours, and here I thought I was nuts!

I'm not a big fan of Uncle Mike's but I recently started using their military sling swivels and love them: http://www.brownells.com/shooting-a...-sku593000002-8879-22027.aspx?sku=593-000-002

They're old school, dating back to the 70s and 80s, but some people still like them.

I don't like HK Hooks at all and couldn't wait to change out my AI to flush cups as soon as I could.

We use the US made Grovtec Mil-Force swivels. The Uncle Mikes military swivels aren't even in the same league as the Grovtec products. They're made in China and I've had the pin break on several throughout the years when I was using them.

I haven't had any problems at all since we switched over to the Grovtec products.

Witchita swivels
HK Hooks
QD swivels

These are predominately what your going to see.

QDs have there place and are popular. QDs can rust and they can get crap in them thereby not allowing them to function. I have dropped a rifle when the QDs gave way. That was the last time I spec'd QD. In fairness, if you keep them dry, lube them periodically, and keep grit / mud out of the sockets - they will more than likely be fine.

Wichita's are old school and they work.

HK Hooks - original design can be a grabby thing without a lock - ie it can fail. In general I don't like HK 'Hooks'. The 'Mash' Hook is a better solution - I think the sling would give before the hook would fail, but they are big, don't lay flat when slung up, and may be noisy to some.

Good luck

Great intel, thanks! I was just getting ready to order more of the UM swivels...I'll redirect fire to the Grovtec.
