Mounting a two piece nightforce 20 MOA pic base on a Rem 700 SPS, and the scope doesn't sit in the rings (PRW) properly. I think it's cause the metal on the reciever is a little off, which on a one piece base is easy to correct by bedding one side... But how do you do that with a two- piece base?

I was thinking about using a one inch diameter aluminum stock and mounting it into the rings, which are mounted to each pic rail (off to the side, to allow access to the screw holes), and doing a bedding job that way.... Or can I just take a skim cut off the bottom of the taller of the rails, so they match up?

Has anyone done that before? Or should I just get a one piece and scrap the 2 piece idea?

Wait, you know the NF dual bases are directional, you can only mount them one way. FT front toward muzzle and RS rear toward muzzle .

Did you have a similar problem with a singe piece base?

Yes, understand that it's directional. Its oriented the right way, it's just that when I have the lower half of the rings mounted on the bases and set the scope on top, it's not perfectly lined up. I could just crank the rings tight, but I don't want to deform the scope. I think the height of the bases are slightly off, and if I had a one piece base, I would just bed one side to level it. But how do you do it with a two piece?

That sir, is a great suggestion. I know some people swear by it, but i've never done it before. It's only slightly off, so should work.

Quick follow up - do you typically paint the rings after lapping? Mine are steel and will need something... Any suggestions?

Yep, lap if they're not too far off. I've never bothered painting the lapped area, its unseen after the scope is mounted and I've never had any kind of problem caused by it.
