My .300 win mag will be complete in the next week or so, however I have no ammo to shoot through it and have not got into the reloading hobby yet. This is my first LA and don't know much about the ammo/cost. I am only going to be using this to punch paper and steel targets out to about 600-800 yards for now. I am trying to narrow down some choices which are:

Federal Gold Match 190 grain SMK BTHP @ $50.85/box of 20
or
Hornady 178 grain AMax @ $38.95/box of 20.

For what I am using it for would I just be better off with going with the cheaper stuff or is there something better and more cost effective out there that I'm missing. I have always had great results with the FGM 168gr for my .308 and have plenty of those stockpiled. Thanks for any help. (I could not locate my answer with the search bar)

Khall540,

Contact Josh at Copper Creek Cartridge Company. I'd get him to load up some 208gr A-Max's and 210gr Berger VLD's to try. He's got good prices too. I reload my own and shoot these exclusively. He can put together almost anything you want.

Wow, my jaw dropped reading that. I just bought a win mag too and $50 for a box of 20 is ridiculous!! You might as well hold on to the money for the ammo and spend that money on reloading equipment. I just got my bench completely set up for .308 and .45, and now I just have to purchase .300 WM dies, magnum primers, and .300 WM brass. I will continue using the .308 barnes TSX 168 gr bullets and overall just save a crapton of money. I shoot the crap out of my guns and found myself a slave to factory ammo. I stopped shooting for a few months and blew about 1 grand on equipment that will save in the long run. I suggest you do the same. I get my rifle in a week and will have to wait for ammo to drop considerably.

Thank you for the heads up on WM cost, I had not even started looking.

coppercreekammo looks like they are backordered for a while. I guess I don't really know what the going rate was for factory .300 win mag ammo before all the craziness. I have no problem paying the $1/round of my .308 FGMM 168 SMK in Nov of 2012.

I've bought from Southwest Ammo, he does a great job on 208 gr AMAXs for about $38/20. Bit of a wait right now but that's to be expected.
