best close range rangefinder?

yeah yeah, i like the swarovskis, but they are overkill for what i want and a little too big and bulky.

what would be the best rangefinder for up to 500 yards? im looking for something more compact and lightweight, but a solid reputation for durability and not breaking or having issues is my top priority.

Depending on your budget, the Bushnell ARC 1500 is a decent unit for the money and for the range you would be needing it for. Personally, I would use a Zeiss PLRF. Compact and super-light, as well as a true illuminated reticle.

I use a hawke 1000 and its good for up to about 600 yards. I cant compare it to a swaro regarding size and weight but I reckon it would probably tick the boxes for compact and lightweight. Also, its cheap and cheerful and if 500 is your max range then I cant see you having many issues.

BTW... might be worth checking out eurooptics demo models and second hand stuff. Ive a picked up a few bargains.

For bow hunting I use a Leupold Rx-1000i and pretty impressed with the unit. I also have a Swaro and although the glass in the Rx-1000 is not as bright it ranges just as well.

The Leica 1000 is a solid performer, clear glass and fast, Eurooptic has them on sale for a crazy discount, as they are replacing the 1000 with the 1000B. If all you need is the range and not all the ballistic calc stuff the Leica is a sure win.

I second Bushnell ARC for a functional, affordable, durable enough for me range finder. My 1000 gets to 400 almost always and 500 usually. I recently bought a Leica 1600 and so far the Bushnell seems to get the job done about as well under 400 yards under most conditions. I think they also make a ARC 1200, which should get you to 500+ no problem.
