Local gun shop has one and I love it. Been wanting a nice bolt action rifle chambered in .308 for a while now. He also has the 700p but that's a little too bulky for me. It will be used for hunting whitetail and punching alot of paper. I dont want to buy a rifle with a cheap stock and go thru the process of swapping stocks. I will be reloading also. This will be my first serious bolt action rifle and want the best bang for my buck. Whats your opinion of this rifle or some other options. I want to keep the price of the rifle under $1000. Thanks

Go for it, if the price is reasonable you will have a great dual purpose rifle. Glass it, new trigger and your good-to-go.

You might save a little cash getting a synthetic varmint with the HS-P stock and shortening it. Something to consider. The LTR metal finish... if its still the same as 9-10 years ago is great. The Varmint palm matches the LTR where the 700P palm swell (and 5R) I find excessive for off-hand purchase.
There are dealer exclusive runs of a 20" fluted LTR-like rifle with a faster 1-10twist and threaded muzzle. The stock is not the HS-P though, more like or the same as the SPS. 2nd hand Rem HS-P stocks are not to hard to find.

I'm not a Savage guy so there isn't much I will push. The button pulled Savage barrels seem to shoot well (Rem's are hammer forged).

If you want a out-of-the-box Rem, I think its a great choice.

700 LTR is the issue rifle for our Department. Size and weight are about perfect for a rifle you are going to be carrying while hunting and shooting in positions other that prone on a flat range. Of the 8 or so we have bought in the last few years they have all been excellent shooters out of the box. A nice trigger would be a good investment for it, other than that the only thing I wish for on them is detachable mag bottom metal. Although for a hunting rig, this is really a non issue.

Got one!! Love it! I even competed with it until I got my build. It regularly shot 3/8 inch at 100yds. they hang with most other guns in accuracy out to 600yds plus, or until the steam runs out. for what you describe your use for it it will serve you well. Most have a generous throat so your favorite handloads should not be a problem.

The LTR is a great rifle for your purpose. The stock is great if you don't want to go through the ordeal of getting another stock. It has an aluminum block so you don't need to bed it. 700p's are great rifles straight out of the box.
